Marianela Boan Artist Talk

Showing on Zoom on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:00pm EST.
In this hour-long discussion, Marianela Boan will discuss her creative process. Her new work 'Beyond' premiered in the year's AU Dance Theater - Mapping 2021: An Exhibition of Dance. Earlier this semester, Boan worked with 11 Alfred University students as dancers and other essential production roles to create the work.

About the Marlin Miller Guest Artist...
Marianela Boán, who is currently living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is an internationally recognized choreographer and one of the most important artists of the Cuban and Latin American dance vanguard. Her revolutionary style "Dance Polluted" radically mixes all arts associated with dance, producing an expressive and original scenic result. As a choreographer, dancer, and teacher, Boán has worked in more than 40 countries presenting her works and giving workshops in numerous venues and festivals in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. She has created nearly 70 choreographic works for dance, theatre, TV and film companies.

Boán was the founding director of the companies DanzAbierta in Cuba, then BoanDanz Action in the USA, and then Compañía Nacional de Danza Contemporánea of the Dominican Republic, for the past 10 years. The Encounter of Women of Latin America in the Performing Arts, 2014, paid homage to her life and professional work by awarding her the Glo prize. Her works have been presented world-wide and extensively in Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Peru, Portugal, Equador and the USA. Most importantly she has performed several times in Alfred through the Marlin Miller Dance Residency Program. In 2018, UNESCO selected her to write the International Dance Day message for the Américas.

Thank You Marlin Miller

Marianela Boán's piece created with AU students is made possible by the Marlin Miller Dance Residency Program. This generous program engages Alfred University students, faculty, and the Alfred Community with accomplished dance artists through workshops, lecture demonstrations, and live performances.
