Business Purpose Statements in The Saxon Shop

In order to streamline the requisition approval process in The Saxon Shop (Unimarket), we are now requiring that all requisitions include a justification statement. We ask that you simply state the business purpose of your purchase. If you think it would help the approver(s), there is also the possibility of adding attachments to your justification. Some examples of potential justification statements are:

- This requisition is for supplies required for the ___________ class I am teaching this semester.

- This requisition is for office furniture for a new employee in our department, John Smith, who will be starting on September 4th. Procurement helped us to secure quotations.

- We are placing this order with Amazon instead of B&H because the projector is on back order with B&H and we need it ASAP.

- These materials are for storing samples and materials for the ARL project.

This change in the process will save the approver(s) throughout the workflow from needing to email or call you with questions regarding the order.

Because of this change, you will no longer have to answer the question, "Is this requisition related to Sponsored Research or a Grant?"

As always, please feel free to contact the Procurement Office if you have any questions or need additional information.

Thank you.

The Information Literacy Librarian has created a series of canvas modules that can be imported into your Canvas courses. The most popular modules include building complex searches, finding scholarly articles, and creating appropriate citations.

Other topics include Zotero (citation manager), using library resources, evaluating sources, and brainstorming research questions.

Email Kevin Adams to request a module: [email protected].

NOTE: If you have used an Information Literacy Module in the past, please reach out to Kevin for an updated version, instead of copying the old one. Most modules were updated last year.

Engineering Seminar-Casey Schwarz

Engineering Seminar

Casey Schwarz, PhD

Associate Professor of Physics, Department Chair
Ursinus College

"Advances in Engineered Chalcogenide Glass Materials for Optical and Photonic Devices"

Thursday, September 14th, 2023
11:20 - 12:10 p.m.
Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall

BIO:Casey M. Schwarz completed her PhD in physics at UCF in 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Leonid Chernyak studying the radiation effects of semiconductor transport properties using electron beam induced current and Cathodoluminescence characterization techniques. Schwarz went on to teach at Valencia College in 2012 as an Adjunct Professor of Physics. Schwarz then joined the Kuebler research group in spring of 2013 a post-doctoral researcher where she investigated the processing and properties of novel materials for future optical device applications. Schwarz joined the faculty at Ursinus College in the fall of 2016. Her research interests include 3D direct laser writing of multi-component chalcogenide materials, development and design of optical devices, and optical characterization. The development of optics that function at wavelengths in the infrared (IR) can be used for applications in diagnostic medicine, environmental sensing, space exploration, and search-and-rescue tools. She is also very active in her outreach activities which include mentoring high school and undergraduate students and participating in promotion of women in science events and organizations. She lives in Collegeville, PA with her husband, 3 year old "mini-scientist" daughter and big dog.

Abstract: In this presentation, I will discuss recent advancements in the development of methodologies and techniques used to structurally and morphologically engineer novel chalcogenide (ChG) materials. Innovative deposition and processing techniques of ChG thin films and our methods used to pattern them will be introduced. Multiphoton lithography (MPL) was used to create nanoscale alterations in thermally deposited As2S3, leading to the successful fabrication of a gradient refractive index (GRIN) effective medium lens within multilayer As2S3-As2Se3 films. This lens possessed structures as small as 120 nm and demonstrated optical functionality. Additionally, ChG Ge-Sb-Se-Te (GSST) material is explored for its potential as a phase-change material (PCM), including a novel solution process for film deposition. These innovative material processing and structuring methods open up exciting avenues for the creation of functional planar optical and photonic devices. Lastly, I will discuss teaching, outreach, careers and what makes these topics so exciting.
