Canvas Tip of the Week - Edit Titles of Items Added to Modules

ITS is pleased to highlight Canvas tools and features that can help faculty and students achieve their goals. This week's tip is:

Edit Titles of Items Added to Modules

When an instructor adds an item to a module, they have the ability to change the name of the title. The edited title can take the place of the file name of an uploaded document. Changing the title can clarify what the item is and make it easier for the students to identify. Instructions are included in the guide below:

Black History Month Featured Person of the Day

As a child, Mark Dean excelled in math. In elementary school, he took advanced level math courses, and, in high school, Dean even built his own computer, radio, and amplifier. Dean continued his interests and went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford. He is one of the most prominent black inventors in the field of computers.

Dr. Mark Dean started working at IBM in 1980 and was instrumental in the invention of the Personal Computer (PC). He holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents and currently holds more than 20 total patents.

His work helped shape the personal computing industry in the 1980s.

Some of his key achievements include:
IBM Personal Computer: As part of a team at IBM, Mark Dean played a crucial role in the design of the original IBM PC in 1981. This computer helped standardize the personal computer market, which was previously fragmented with different manufacturers using different designs and components.
ISA Bus: He also co-invented the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus, a computer bus that allowed peripheral devices (like printers and modems) to connect to the main computer. This became a key part of early computer architecture and made PCs more versatile.

Color Graphics Adapter: Dean was also involved in the creation of the Color Graphics Adapter (CGA), which was an important innovation in early computer graphics.

He was awarded several patents for his work and made significant contributions to the technology that laid the foundation for modern personal computing

Did you know?

Did you know? Commencement IS NOT Graduation
There is a difference between Graduation and Commencement!
Commencement is a ceremony where the student's accomplishments are celebrated. Graduation is the official awarding of your degree. You must complete a Graduation Application to be officially awarded your degree. On the application there is an area to complete if you desire to attend commencement. You will not graduate without a Graduation Application on file with the Registrar's office regardless of attending commencement. Check out the graduation checklist page!!
