Bergren Forum: Chloe Hansen

Dying is not easy, but it needn't be this hard: Care versus choice in end-of-life narratives
Chloe Hansen, Clinical Asst. Prof. of English/Director of the Writing Center, will discuss the ideal of the good death in (pre-COVID) end-of-life narratives. Taking seriously the idea that public narratives can shape our expectations of medical situations, she argues that emphasizing care-rather than the emphasis on choice found in many contemporary discourses-may shift understandings of good versus bad dying, as well as our hopes and fears about living in the face of death.

Black History Month Featured Person of the Day

Dr. Robert L. Johnson, MD, FAAP, has been a prominent figure in medical education and adolescent health. He served as the Sharon and Joseph L. Muscarelle Endowed Dean of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) from March 16, 2011, until his retirement in 2023.

During his tenure, Dr. Johnson was recognized as the only dean in the United States to oversee two medical schools simultaneously. In 2015, he was appointed Interim Dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) in New Brunswick, New Jersey, while continuing his role at NJMS. This dual leadership role was unprecedented in the U.S. medical education system.

Dr. Johnson's clinical expertise and research focused on adolescent physical and mental health, adolescent HIV, adolescent violence, adolescent sexuality, health equity, and family strengthening. He chaired the New Jersey Governor's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and Related Blood Borne Pathogens and the Newark Ryan White Planning Council. He was also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and served on the Advisory Committee of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences of the National Research Council's National Academy of Sciences.

In 2023, Dr. Johnson delivered the keynote address at Alfred University 187th commencement, his alma mater, where he was honored for his significant contributions to medical education and adolescent health. He received a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa, in recognition of his distinguished career in medicine.

Under his leadership, NJMS and RWJMS made significant strides in medical education, research, and community health initiatives, leaving a lasting impact on the institutions and the broader medical community.
