Math and Art Class and Optional Ireland Trip

Currently enrolling students for fall 2025, MATH 200 or MATH 400 Math and Art:

In this projects-based course, we draw on the research of AU faculty and on students' interests to explore intersections between math and art. Examples of previous topics include knot theory, group theory, crochet, sashiko, automating patterns, hyperbolic geometry, dance, tessellations, printmaking, Sol LeWitt, and more. Students produce artwork and/or analytical papers eligible for peer review with The Bridges Organization, an international math, art, music, architecture, and culture organization with an annual conference and a variety of publications. Mentoring students submitting work, obtaining traveling funding, and/or attending the Bridges Galway 2026 in Ireland, August 5-9, 2026, is part of the instructor's commitment to the course, but submission and conference attendance is optional for students and not a part of course grading. For more information about the Bridges organization, including archives of previously accepted artwork and papers, conference announcements and updates see https://www.bridgesmathar....
Projects in the 400-level course option have additional math requirements that the 200-level course does not. The 400-level course also has MATH 281 Foundation of Math as a prerequisite.

The course meets MWF 1:20-2:10 pm and is 3 credits.
