ITS is pleased to highlight Canvas tools and features that can help faculty and students achieve their goals. This week's tip is:
Allow Multiple Submission Types for Online Assignments
When creating an online Assignment in Canvas, you have the ability to allow multiple submission types. These types include: file upload, text entry, and media recording (audio/ video). Providing options can allow students to choose how to participate based on personal strengths and preferences. It can also accommodate variety in technology and equity (internet quality/ device access). Instructions are included in the guide below.

Are you interested in traveling abroad as part of your time here at Alfred?
If you drop by Powell Campus Center on Wednesday Oct. 29 between 11:30am and 1pm, there will be representatives from the study abroad office, the Global Studies department, the Fulbright scholarship committee, and the Career Development Center (international internships).
Also, if you don't have your passport yet, the Global Studies department will have information on where you can have your passport photos taken for free here on campus. It's a great opportunity to drop by and get some extra information on where you can go, and the different international opportunities available through AU!

Please be advised of the following updates to payroll procedures, effective immediately:
All employee timesheets submitted through Banner Web must be approved by the employee's direct supervisor. The Payroll Office is no longer authorized to approve timesheets on behalf of supervisors under any circumstances.
To ensure timely payment, please observe the following guidelines:
* Student Employees: Timesheets that remain unapproved by the supervisor by close of business on Wednesday OF THE PAY PERIOD WEEK will not be processed for the current payroll cycle. Payment will instead be issued during the subsequent payroll period: once we have received the approved paper timesheet from the supervisor.
* Full-Time Employees: If a timesheet is not approved by the stated deadline, the employee will receive payment for their base rate only. Any additional earnings or adjustments will be processed in the following payroll cycle.
We appreciate your attention to these updates and your continued cooperation in maintaining accurate and timely payroll processing.
Thank you for your attention to these changes and for helping ensure timely and accurate payroll processing.

If you're a first-year or transfer student, you'll notice a class called Common Ground on your spring schedule. In this one-credit course, you'll have the kinds of discussions that we see as essential to your education -- about what's going on in the world, what kind of community we want to create, and how to have civil discourse across ideological boundaries. You'll get a chance to meet (and have meaningful conversation with) students with diverse academic interests, backgrounds, and beliefs. Classes only meet once a week for 50 minutes, so it won't add to your academic workload, but it will add value to your AU degree by developing your capacity to work well with others (and it is a university requirement). Classes meet either Wednesdays or Thursdays, 3:20 - 4:10. Because we don't want Common Ground to interfere with the rest of your academic program, we won't assign you to a particular section until you've had a chance to register for your other spring classes. If you have any questions about the Common Ground program, please contact Melissa Ryan, Professor of English, [email protected].
