Bergren Forum - Fall 2025: A Voice that Dares

Episode 12, Chrissy Ziese
A Voice that Dares: American Musical Theatre as a Societal Mirror
This presentation explores how American musical theatre has long served as a bold, reflective force within society-challenging norms, amplifying marginalized voices, and sparking cultural conversations. From the idealism of Oklahoma!, the incendiary class commentary of The Cradle Will Rock and the revolutionary fervor of Hamilton, musical theatre has not only entertained but also dared to confront issues of race, gender, sexuality, politics, and societal identity. Through key examples and critical analysis, this talk examines how musicals both mirror and shape the American social landscape, revealing the genre's unique power to inspire change while reflecting the complexities of the times.

Bergren Forum - Fall 2025
The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, runs 12:15-1:10 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center and by zoom. Bring a brown bag lunch if you wish. Coffee and tea will be provided. For further information contact or a calendar invite with the zoom link, contact John D'[email protected]

Dr. Kelli Morgan is a curator, educator, and advocate for
equity in the cultural sector. She is a critical race cultural historian specializing in American art and visual culture. Her research and curatorial practice examine how artists, artworks, and institutions reveal or reinforce systemic anti-Blackness. Her scholarship shows how traditional art history and museum structures can
sustain white supremacy.

A native of Detroit, Morgan holds a doctorate in African American Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is the Founding Executive Director and CEO of the Black Artists Archive, a nonprofit in Detroit

Thanksgiving Holiday

Please note that we are observing the Thanksgiving Holiday on 11/27/25 & 11/28/25.

How to enter Holiday time on timesheets:

Under the Holiday slot on your timesheet, enter the required hours per day you have to work. You will either be entering 7, 7.5, or 8 hours depending on your job classification and accrued leave time.

If you are a temporary employee (whether you are PT or FT) with the University (this excludes student workers and interns) you need to code 4 hours of Holiday time on your timesheet for each day that you would normally work. If you work your normal scheduled hours, you will not receive the full 4 hours of Holiday pay. Example if you are scheduled 3 hours on 11/27/2025 and work those 3 hours you will only receive 1 hour of Holiday time.

For hourly employees who will be required to work over the holiday break you will enter the hours you worked along with entering your holiday time (you will have a total of 2 entries for the days you work over the break). Only essential staff, with prior approval from their supervisor, will have coded work hours over the break.

Any questions, please reach out to [email protected]
