ITS is pleased to highlight Canvas tools and features that can help faculty and students achieve their goals. This week's tip is:
Weight the Final Grade Based on Assignment Group Categories
Instructors have the ability to calculate the final course grade based on assignment groups or categories. First, you need to create assignment groups (Quizzes, Exams, Projects, etc.) and add each assignment to its corresponding group. After the groups have been created, you can adjust the percentage of the overall grade that is represented by each group. Instructions are included in the guide below.

As the seasons change, we want to remind everyone to park only in designated parking areas. With snow expected soon, vehicles parked in restricted areas-including fire lanes-risk being plowed in or blocking essential access.
If you're unsure where parking is permitted, please refer to our Vehicle Regulations and Parking Map.
We also ask that you avoid parking in front of dumpsters. Blocked dumpsters prevent the refuse company from emptying them and can cause service delays.
Thank you for helping keep our campus safe and accessible.

Please note that we are observing the Thanksgiving Holiday on 11/27/25 & 11/28/25.
How to enter Holiday time on timesheets:
Under the Holiday slot on your timesheet, enter the required hours per day you have to work. You will either be entering 7, 7.5, or 8 hours depending on your job classification and accrued leave time.
If you are a temporary employee (whether you are PT or FT) with the University (this excludes student workers and interns) you need to code 4 hours of Holiday time on your timesheet for each day that you would normally work. If you work your normal scheduled hours, you will not receive the full 4 hours of Holiday pay. Example if you are scheduled 3 hours on 11/27/2025 and work those 3 hours you will only receive 1 hour of Holiday time.
For hourly employees who will be required to work over the holiday break you will enter the hours you worked along with entering your holiday time (you will have a total of 2 entries for the days you work over the break). Only essential staff, with prior approval from their supervisor, will have coded work hours over the break.
Any questions, please reach out to [email protected]

Alfred Ceramic Art Museum presents 2026 upcoming exhibition.
"Eugene Ofori-Agyei: Fihankra (You Did Not Say Goodbye When You Left Home)."
February 12th to July 19th, 2026
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 12, 5-7pm
Eugene Agyei arrived at Alfred University in 2023, chosen by the Division of Ceramic Art faculty as the Turner Teaching Fellow in the School of Art & Design at the New York State College of Ceramics. Over the course of the following years, he formed a bond with the students, faculty and entire community, all the while developing his own complex body of work. In this exhibition, Agyei borrows from the tradition of Adinkra symbolism, native to his homeland of Ghana, in which a single symbol can express a range of complex ideas. These symbols form the starting point, but then mutate and transform into rich "assemblage" works incorporating fabric, wool, and wood in which formal and material considerations are given priority over direct symbolism.

Alfred Ceramic Art Museum presents upcoming Spring 2026 Exhibition:
"Sharif Bey: Autoethnography"
February 12th to July 19th, 2026
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 12, 5-7pm
Sharif Bey is an ambidextrous user of clay, as comfortable making pots as he is making poetic figures, daunting wall pieces or the gargantuan necklaces of his "Adornment" series. His work can be read at many levels - as an exploration of the multifaceted "ethnos" of his life; as an investigation of how meanings can shift according to context; as a ceramic practice that refuses to remain fixed in any one category, celebrating instead the endless possibilities of the medium. This show presents the diversity of Bey's practice, which nevertheless retains a united, and utterly unique, style and vision.

Starting in the early spring semester, we will launch a weekly KnowBe4 simulated phishing campaign for students. This initiative mirrors the program currently in place for employees and is designed to help students recognize and resist social engineering attacks from external bad actors. Phishing remains a significant issue for organizations of all sizes, and developing these skills is essential for personal and professional security.
Student instructions regarding the Phish Alert Button (PAB)-a tool many employees are already familiar with, will be shared at a future date. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at [email protected] or 607-871-2222.
To make this initiative engaging, we will also run a contest for the most conscientious student reporters of phishing emails through the Phish Alert Button (PAB). Students who consistently identify and report phishing attempts will have the opportunity to win a used laptop as part of this contest.
This program aligns with our educational mission and prepares students for the realities of the modern workplace, where cybersecurity awareness is critical. if you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at [email protected] or 607-871-2222.
