AU's Universal Design for Learning Task Force is pleased to share weekly tips to help faculty and staff provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of differences that may impact learning. This week's tip is:
Convey Meaning through Text Rather than Color
When creating materials for students, please ensure that students are able to engage with the content regardless of the use of color. It is important to convey meaning through the text itself, rather than relying solely on color. Not all individuals are capable of seeing color the same way. As a result, the students' understanding of colorful or highlighted text may differ from the intended meaning.
If colorful text is used, it is important to ensure good contrast between the font and the background for readability. The WebAIM Contrast Checker can help ensure that there is enough contrast between the text and background.

AU's Universal Design for Learning Task Force is pleased to share weekly tips to help faculty and staff provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of differences that may impact learning. This week's tip is:
Meaningful Link Text
When you share links with users in an email, document, or Canvas course, it is important that the link text (that the user clicks on) describe the destination of the link. Otherwise, they will not know where the link is taking them. Please avoid using the URL or "click here" as link text, as they are ambiguous and their locations are not readable by screen readers.

Applications are now open for the Women's Leadership Academy for next year (2026-27)!
This program is open to ALL students. So long as you are not graduating prior to Spring 2027, you can participate!
What is the Women's Leadership Academy? This program (WLA for short) is a long-standing tradition of the Judson Leadership Center. For students who wish to explore leadership development and have an interest in the intersections of gender, leadership, social change, and more - this might be the right fit for you. The program does involve two courses that are 2-credits each - one in the fall and one in the spring. The WLA is a one-year commitment [one academic year].
We are now taking applications for next year's cohort (Fall 2026 - Spring 2027). Faculty, staff, and students can also nominate a student to the WLA by sending Abby Hurley ([email protected]) their name.
We are also having a Women's Leadership Academy Open House on Saturday, February 21st in the Judson Leadership Center that you can attend to learn more.
To apply for the WLA, use the link in this post. Applications are due March 8th, 2026.

Feb. 5 Bergren Forum: Coaches Panel, moderated by Deb Steward; Building Leaders On and Off the Field: The Developmental Role of DIII Athletics.
Alfred University coaches recruit across the globe to find prospective student-athletes who will be successful 'on and off the field' at Alfred University. With a mindset that we are teaching life lessons through sport, our coaches serve as mentors and teachers to our student-athletes. The coaches build team cultures and environments that aid in the growth of student-athletes' leadership and personal developmental skills. Empirical studies show DIII student-athletes commonly excel in dimensions such as modeling positive behaviors, inspiring shared vision, challenging norms, enabling others to act, and encouraging motivation and hope in teammates.
In this forum, you will hear from five of our coaches in a Q&A session moderated by Deb Steward, Associate Vice President for Student Experience, Athletics, & Recreation.
The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, runs 12:15-1:10 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center and by zoom. Bring a brown bag lunch if you wish. Coffee and tea will be provided. For further information contact or a calendar invite with the zoom link, contact John D'[email protected]
