For the first time at Alfred University, the Department of Communication Studies is proud to offer Investigative Journalism - a hands-on, skills-based course that brings computer-assisted reporting into the classroom.
Journalism is changing. The stories that matter most are increasingly driven by data - public records, government databases, and digital documents that reveal patterns invisible to the naked eye. This course prepares students to find those patterns and turn them into compelling, responsible news reporting.
What You Will Learn
Students will work directly with real datasets and public records, developing practical skills in:
Data analysis for journalism using Microsoft Excel and database tools
Locating, requesting, and evaluating public records and government datasets
Creating clear and accurate data visualizations
Applying investigative and daily reporting strategies
Using data ethically and responsibly in news stories
No advanced coding or technical experience is required. If you can think critically and tell a story, this course will give you the tools to tell it better.
Why This Course Matters
Data journalism is no longer a specialty - it is a core competency for reporters across every beat. An ever-growing number of journalists use data techniques daily to provide context, uncover trends, and replace anecdotes with solid evidence. This course lays that foundation.

I am researching glass recycling across NY, PA, and OH. For this research, I need to know the perspectives of glass factories, recycling facilities, and you, the consumer. If you would be able to answer a few questions about your recycling habits, that would be very helpful!

This is your friendly reminder that Alfred University will be observing Independence Day on Friday July 3rd. This is a paid holiday for all eligible employees and falls on the #15 pay period (6/21/26-7/4/26). Please be mindful to not copy and paste your hours on this timesheet and code that you worked on 7/3 when you took Holiday time.
Supervisors should review all employees' timesheets individually, for accuracy, please do not just select approve all.
How to enter Holiday time on timesheets:
Under the Holiday slot on your timesheet, enter the required hours per day by either entering 7, 7.5, or 8 hours depending on your job classification and accrued leave time.
For hourly employees who will be required to work over the holiday break you will enter the hours you worked along with entering your holiday time (you will have a total of 2 entries for the days you work over the break). Only essential staff, with prior approval by their Supervisor, will have coded work hours over the break. Supervisor please email payroll who you anticipated to work on July 3rd.
Summer & student workers do not qualify for holiday pay. If you are a temporary employee (whether you are PT or FT) with the University (this excludes student workers and interns) you need to code 4 hours of Holiday time on your timesheet for each day that you would normally work. If you work your normal scheduled hours, you will not receive the full 4 hours of Holiday pay. Example if you are scheduled 3 hours on 07/03/2026 and work those 3 hours you will only receive 1 hour of Holiday time.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to [email protected]
