Should your post be an Alfred Today Announcement or an Event?

Campus community,

We have noticed a large influx of Alfred Today announcements over the past academic year that could likely be events posted to the event calendar instead.

Before posting to Alfred Today, please consider whether an informational item should be created on the event calendar or posted as an announcement.

What's the difference? Events take place at a specific location, at a given date and time.

If your informational item doesn't have a location, date or time - then it is likely an announcement for Alfred Today.

First Ever: Investigative Journalism Comes to Alfred U.

For the first time at Alfred University, the Department of Communication Studies is proud to offer Investigative Journalism - a hands-on, skills-based course that brings computer-assisted reporting into the classroom.
Journalism is changing. The stories that matter most are increasingly driven by data - public records, government databases, and digital documents that reveal patterns invisible to the naked eye. This course prepares students to find those patterns and turn them into compelling, responsible news reporting.

What You Will Learn
Students will work directly with real datasets and public records, developing practical skills in:

Data analysis for journalism using Microsoft Excel and database tools
Locating, requesting, and evaluating public records and government datasets
Creating clear and accurate data visualizations
Applying investigative and daily reporting strategies
Using data ethically and responsibly in news stories

No advanced coding or technical experience is required. If you can think critically and tell a story, this course will give you the tools to tell it better.

Why This Course Matters
Data journalism is no longer a specialty - it is a core competency for reporters across every beat. An ever-growing number of journalists use data techniques daily to provide context, uncover trends, and replace anecdotes with solid evidence. This course lays that foundation.

Course Details
?? Fall 2026
?? Monday thru Thursday | 10:20 AM - 11:10 AM
?? Seidlin 016
?? CRN: 19800

Open to all students. No technical background required. Seats are limited - early registration is encouraged.
