Bergren Forum, Journalism Under Pressure: My Journey from the Newsroom

Fall 2026, Episode 5, Oct 1, Hakan Karaaytu
Journalism Under Pressure: My Journey from the Newsroom to Exile

What happens when telling the truth becomes dangerous? In this talk, I share my personal journey as a journalist in Trkiye-from local political reporting and investigative journalism to working with CNN Trk and CNN International, and eventually being forced into exile in the United States. Alongside my own experiences with political pressure, threats, censorship, and professional ethical dilemmas, I examine the broader challenges facing journalism and press freedom in Trkiye. Ultimately, this is a story about journalism, resilience, and the difficult choices journalists make when truth, professional integrity, and personal safety collide.

Bergren Forum - Fall 2026
The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, runs 12:15-1:10 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center and by zoom. Campus Shred scheduled for Tuesday, October 13th

Shred-It will be coming to campus for an on-site shred on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

They no longer accept drive up deliveries of materials to be shredded and require that we have everything there when they arrive. Based on that, we are asking that work orders for moving materials be entered by Wednesday, October 7th so that Facilities has time to get everything collected.

Here are some guidelines for the event: Documents must be sensitive in nature. If they are not, then they do not require shredding and should be recycled. Materials must be removed from binders and folders. Materials may be stapled, but any binder clips, coils, etc. must be removed. We do ask that the materials be placed in boxes for easier transport. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact the Procurement Office at x2698.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support those affected by breast cancer, honor those we have lost, and encourage everyone to learn more about breast health.

Starting Oct. 2, join us in Ade Dining Hall on the first floor as we kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with information, resources, and opportunities to connect and show your support.

Throughout October, Wellness Wednesdays on Oct. 7, 21, and 28 will also feature Breast Cancer Awareness activities. At each event, we will be collecting donations that will be provided to a local breast cancer center to support individuals and families affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer can affect people of all backgrounds. Taking time to understand risk factors, know what is normal for your body, and talk with a healthcare provider about questions or concerns can be an important part of taking care of yourself.

Come out, join us, pick up information, participate in our activities, and help us spread awareness and support our community.

Wear pink. Start a conversation. Share resources. Show support.

Most importantly, remember that no one should have to navigate a cancer experience alone. Community, compassion, and support matter.

Come out and join us throughout October!

October 2 * Ade Dining Hall, First Floor
Wellness Wednesdays: Oct. 7, 21, and 28

Together, we can raise awareness and support one another.
