Alumni - An AU Love Story
Matthew Paul '88 and Maria DeAngelo '90

Matthew Paul ‘88 and Maria DeAngelo ‘90Matthew Paul '88 and Maria DeAngelo '90 have been making Art side by side for the past 20 years. Matt and Maria are both graduates of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Matt is the Production Coordinator of Adirondack Life Magazine in Jay, NY. Maria teaches Art at Saranac Lake Middle School. Matt and Maria are both residents of Saranac Lake where they live with their children Max and Morgan.

In 1988 The Brick was deep into a Murder game during which Maria "shot" Matt in room 320. Valentine's Day a note appeared in the Fiat Lux documenting the fatal shot and they have been together ever since. Their favorite memories of AU are of the Brick, Harder Hall roof, and the gang on West University.

Their current show, Side by Side, is a collection of their most recent work consisting of charcoal drawings by Matt and acrylic paintings by Maria. Matt says he stands around all night "making faces" as he crafts portraits of local families. Maria's latest paintings juxtapose natural forms, because let's face it "juxtapose" is just a fun word to say. When not making art, they can be seen clowning around Saranac Lake with Loon Works Theater. Matt is the troupe's artistic director and Maria is the educational director. Side by Side opens Friday, February 29th, 2008 4:30-6:30 at the Bluseed Studio on Cedar Street in Saranac Lake and runs through March 30th, 2008.
