I can only afford a small gift. Will it make a difference?

In the 2011 fiscal year, 3,102 donors made gifts to the Alfred Fund that were less than $100. The average gift was $34. Those gifts totaled $122,827! Every gift has an impact, and all gifts make a difference because alumni participation matters. U.S. News & World Report considers participation a key indicator of alumni satisfaction with their educational experience, and they use alumni participation as a metric in their annual rankings of colleges and universities. Foundations and corporations also consider alumni participation when deliberating grants. Their rationale: "If alumni don't support their University, why should we?" Bond rating companies consider alumni participation and philanthropy when annually reevaluating bond ratings. The higher the rating, the lower the interest cost for Alfred to borrow money. High participation levels also encourage recent graduates to become involved in Alfred philanthropy.

What kinds of gifts can I make to Alfred?

What exactly is unrestricted giving?

Unrestricted gifts come to Alfred with no restrictions by donors as to how their gifts are used; they are spent within one budget year. They allow the University to seize opportunities as they arise and meet unforeseen challenges—such as the recent unexpected rise in heating oil prices. Think of unrestricted funds as the operating budget's rapid response unit. Restricted gifts to the endowment, on the other hand, ensure that Alfred will be able to meet the needs of future generations of students. An endowment gift is meant to be invested, produce income, and grow with time.

I'm an Alfred parent. How can I make a gift to Alfred?

Families have been donating to the Alfred Fund for more than half a century. We invite you to consider participating in this tradition. Tuition is a tremendous investment, but the full cost of educating each Alfred student is greater still. Parents and Grandparents gifts to the Alfred Fund help bridge the gap by supporting the University’s annual operating budget.
