Marine paintings by Nicholas Berger, AU Class of 1972,  are included in “From Shore To Shore: Boatbuilders and Boatyards of Long Island,” an exhibition running  through Sept. 18, 2015 at the newly restored wing of the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead, NY.


Art by Goldenberg ’74 selected for ‘California Now’ juried exhibit 6/04/15

Art by Eileen P. Goldenberg, AU Class of 1974, has been selected for “California Now,” a clay, glass, and enamel juried exhibit which debuts with an opening reception Saturday, June 13, from 5-7 p.m. in the South and West Galleries at the Richmond Art Center, Richmond, CA.


News Image MFA grad awarded Fulbright to study natural dye extraction in urban Tromso, Norway 6/02/15

Timothy Gonchoroff, a recent graduate of the master of fine arts program in the School of Art and Design at Alfred University (AU), is the recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to Norway.

The United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced that Gonchoroff will research and document the natural dyes extracted from alien plant species growing within the urban environment of Tromsø, Norway.

Higgins ’52 inducted into NYS Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame 5/28/15
It’s been a busy few weeks for Wallace "Wally" Higgins of Alfred Station, a member of the AU Class of 1952. Last week he was inducted into the NYS Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Alexander ’89’s ‘Evolving Poles’ part of outdoor sculpture display 5/28/15
Works by Anne Alexander, AU Class of 1989, are included in the 2015 Art in Nature exhibition at Fruitlands Museum, Harvard, MA, on view in the hillsides and meadows surrounding the museum through Nov. 1, 2015. Anne is one of 14 New England sculptors selected to exhibit in the "2015 Art in Nature" show. Museum visitors will be asked to vote for their favorite artist in the exhibition. More...

Houston criminal defense lawyer Schneider ’71 delivers AU Commencement address, earns Lifetime Achievement Award 5/19/15

In the same week in which he presented the keynote address at his alma mater’s 2015 Commencement exercises (see above), Houston criminal defense attorney Stanley G. Schneider, AU Class of 1971, was honored with the Richard “Racehorse” Haynes Lifetime Achievement Award from the Harriss (Texas) County Criminal Lawyers Association for his outstanding criminal defense work.


News Image Schmidt ’09 and Miller ’09 awarded South Korean ceramics prize for 'Recycled Series' 5/19/15

Thomas Schmidt, AU Class of 2009, writes that following receipt of his master of fine arts degree he went to teach ceramic design at the College of Ceramics’ partner school, The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. While there, he and friend and AU colleague  Jeffrey Miller  ’09 (bachelor of fine arts with ceramic art concentration) “ started a design collaborative called Recycled China ( This collaborative was aimed at sourcing a range of discarded materials and industrial waste from factories within China to produce up-cycled sculptural objects, design works, and architectural tile.

“In March (2015) we received news that one of our works, “Recycled China Series, #1" had received a bronze prize…. at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB), 2015 which opened on April 24, at The Icheon World Ceramic Center in Gyeonggi, South Korea,” said Thomas.


Proceeds from annual 5K run/walk to go to student scholarships 5/19/15

Alfred University (AU) is hosting a 5K Run/Walk to benefit its Dollars for Scholars Fund on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Main Street, Alfred bandstand. Community members are encouraged to participate in the event which is included in the University’s annual Reunion Weekend activities.

The 5K course encompasses the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. There will be a water stop halfway into the course; participants are encouraged to bring their own water as well. Complimentary refreshments will be available following the race/run.

Stanley G. Schneider, one of the nation’s top-rated criminal defense attorney’s offered Alfred University’s (AU) Class of 2015 some well-deliberated advice – “love your work and your relationships; don’t settle for less.”

Schneider, a 1971 AU alumnus, spoke Saturday morning (May 16) before a capacity crowd in the Galanis Family Arena at the McLane Center on campus.

His message was taken from his own life experiences, he explained, noting “Success is defined in many different ways …. Judge yourself (don’t let others do it for you). Success comes from your own sense of decency and accomplishment. Find your passion in life. Create your own style, follow your heart and your intuition. I followed my heart to a rewarding career.”
