Engineering and Materials Science Day 2017

The Alfred University Inamori School of Engineering will host the 42nd annual Engineering and Materials Science Day for junior and senior students from area high schools Thursday, November 2, 2017. Tours and demonstrations in various engineering laboratories will be conducted and students attending will also participate in a scholarship examination. First, Second and Third place winners receive a scholarship that can be used in any of our engineering programs at Alfred University.

Benefits Open Enrollment Information Session

Open Enrollment is the yearly period when employees can enroll in AU’s health insurance plan, make changes to their current health insurance enrollments, or to drop health insurance coverage if no longer necessary. After the Open Enrollment period is done you can no longer make changes to your health care plan until the next year’s open enrollment. The only way you are able to make changes to your health insurance during the year is if you have a qualifying life event.

Spouses that are covered by AU insurance plans are welcome to attend these sessions as well.

The open enrollment for changes to the Non-Statutory (Private side) 2018 Medical and Dental Plans as well as Vision, Life, Accident and Short Term Disability Programs for all Alfred University employees will commence on October 30, 2017 and end on November 17, 2017. The Human Resources Office was able to negotiate a zero percent increase for all overages for the 2018 year without any plan changes.

The Statutory benefit open enrollment dates have not been announced by NYSHIP but we anticipate that we will know shortly and we will announce those dates as soon as we have them.

This year it will be necessary for all employees to return a benefit election form to the HR office. The brochures with the form will be available soon. Meetings will be scheduled to inform employee’s about changes to the Short Term Disability program and the new NY State Paid Family Leave that will start January 1.

Getting Back on Track: A Crash Course in Study Skills and Time Management

Are you disappointed with your midterm grades? Do you spend hours and hours studying and still not understand the material? Do you feel burnt out from trying to manage all you have to do?

This 50-minute workshop will provide some tips and tools to help you study better and manage your tasks more efficiently so that you can finish the semester strong!

Bergren Forum - D. Chase Angier

The Bergren Forum sponsored by the Division of Human Studies, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Provost's Office will be meeting at 12:10 p.m., Thursday November 2 in the Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center.

Topic: "Immersed in Blue: Iceland"

Though her embodied investigation of Iceland's landscapes, art, and swimming polls, Angier explored the dialogue between internal and external landscapes. During this presentation, she will share her discoveries, choreographic processes, and renewed understanding of the transformative power of art and landscapes.

Dr. Rachel Gotlieb is an award-winning ceramic, craft, and design historian and writer who has curated over 20 exhibitions and published extensively on the subject. Rachel is Adjunct Curator at the Gardiner Museum and co-curated the exhibition True Nordic: How Scandinavian Influenced Canadian Design (2016). She was previously the Gardiner’s Chief Curator and Interim Executive Director, during which time she curated Clare Twomey: Piece by Piece, Ante Liu: Mono No Ma, Transformation by Fire: Women Overcoming Violence Through Clay, Go East: Canadians Create in Clay, and Connections: Canadian and British Studio Ceramics. Rachel teaches design history and curatorial practice at the Sheridan College School of Craft and Design and the Ontario College of Art and Design University. She served as the founding curator of the Design Exchange in Toronto, and co-wrote the landmark publication Design in Canada (Knopf Canada, 2001).
