Vaccination FAQs

Frequently asked questions regarding vaccination requirements for students returning to the Alfred University campus for the Fall 2021 semester.

  1. Who is required to be vaccinated for the Fall semester?
    All students living on or off campus must be vaccinated to attend Fall semester classes or participate in any sports, activities or clubs.  Vaccinated students will not be required to wear a mask, maintain social distance from others or submit to periodic COVID testing. 
  2. When must students be vaccinated for the Fall semester?
    Students should plan on being fully vaccinated before returning to Alfred University, prior to move-in day.  Vaccinated students are required to send a scan, photo or copy of their vaccine card to the Wellness Center before departing for Alfred (via fax at 607-871-2631 or our HealthDocs portal). International students are requested to send their documents in English.
  3. What does fully vaccinated mean?
    Fully vaccinated means 2 vaccinations with the following vaccines (followed by a 14-day post-vaccination waiting period after the 2nd dose): Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca-Oxford, Sinopharm, Sinovac OR 1 dose of the following vaccine (followed by a 14-day post-vaccination waiting period): Johnson & Johnson/Janssen
  4. If a student is only able to get 1 dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines prior to arriving in Alfred, what should that student do?
    Any student who is only able to get 1 dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines before leaving for Alfred should notify the Wellness Center and submit a scan, photo or copy of the vaccine card to the Wellness Center (via fax at 607-871-2631 or our HealthDocs portal) and indicate that another dose is needed after arriving at Alfred. Alfred University will be conducting a vaccination clinic shortly after the Fall semester begins for those students requiring a both doses or a 2nd dose.  In addition, vaccines are also available in a number of locations off campus (local hospital, Allegany County Department of Health, local pharmacies).  Under current guidelines, domestic students who have had 1 dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines are able to receive their second dose of the same vaccine after arriving at Alfred.
  5. If an international student has only received the 1st dose of a 2-dose vaccine, will they be able to get the 2nd dose after they arrive in Alfred?
    No, international students not fully vaccinated will be required to wait 28 days beyond the date of their 1st dose and begin a new round of vaccinations—2 doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or 1 dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  6. If a student has received both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer or the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine but the 14-day post-vaccination waiting period has not elapsed, will the student be able to return to Alfred?
    Yes, students who have received a full series of vaccines should return to Alfred even if the post-vaccination waiting period has not elapsed.  Students will be required to wear a mask until the 14-day waiting period has expired.
  7. What must a student do if they are not able to obtain a vaccination before returning to Alfred?
    Students who have not been able to access a vaccination site at home or get vaccinated locally should return to Alfred by their scheduled move-in date or in time for classes to begin.  These students should inform the Wellness Center (607-871-2400 or via our HealthDocs portal) of their intent to be vaccinated at an Alfred University vaccine clinic to be scheduled shortly after students return.  Those students will be notified by the Wellness Center of the date(s) of the scheduled clinics.  In addition, vaccines are also available in a number of locations off campus (local hospital, Allegany County Department of Health, local pharmacies).
  8. What are the vaccination requirements for international students?
    International students are also required to be fully vaccinated before returning to Alfred.  Any World Health Organization-authorized vaccines will be accepted for the vaccination requirement, per the New York State Department of Health.  These include: Pfizer BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson/Janssen, Moderna, AstraZeneca-Oxford, Sinopharm, Sinovac. International students are requested to send their vaccination records (in English) to the Wellness Center via fax at 607-871-2631 or via our HealthDocs portal.
  9. What travel restrictions apply to students arriving from international locations?
    According to Centers for Disease Control guidance, vaccinated and unvaccinated students arriving from international locations are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 3 days before travel, or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months before boarding a flight to the US. Unvaccinated students travelling from abroad should also get a COVID-19 test 3-5 days after arriving in the U.S. and self-quarantine for 7 days. If unvaccinated students travelling from abroad are not tested following arrival in the U.S., they should self-quarantine for 10 days.
  10. Will students who are not fully vaccinated be able to attend classes?
    Yes, students who are not fully vaccinated will be able to attend all their classes.  However, those students, as well as students who have been granted exemptions, will be required to be masked in class and in group settings in which social distancing is not possible and will be COVID tested periodically throughout the semester.
  11. If students are unwilling to attend classes on campus, are they able to take classes remotely?
    If students choose to receive their instruction remotely, they will need to enroll in courses that are designated as being offered remotely.  These students will need work with their advisors or Deans to select such courses.
  12. Will COVID vaccination exemptions be available for students?
    Exemptions will be available for students who have medical conditions or express firmly held religious beliefs against vaccinations.  Students with medical conditions must submit a letter from a duly licensed healthcare provider (medical doctor, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner) to the Wellness Center, via fax at 607-871-2631 or via our HealthDocs portal identifying the specific condition(s) warranting the exemption.  Students who have firmly held religious beliefs preventing them from being vaccinated must submit a letter to the Wellness Center explaining their religious objections.
  1. If students do not intend to be vaccinated or to request an exemption, will they be allowed to take classes in person?
    Students who are not vaccinated or do not receive an exemption will not be allowed to move into their residence hall or attend classes. Those students are requested to notify the Office of Student Affairs at 607-871-2132 and the Alfred University Registrar at 607-871-2123 if they do not intend to return to Alfred in the Fall, or contact their Dean’s office to discuss online options.
  1. If students have had and have recovered from COVID-19, are they exempt from the vaccination requirement?
    No, students who have had COVID and recovered are not exempt from the vaccination requirement.
  1. Will students with exemptions be able to attend classes in person?
    Any student who is granted a medical or religious exemption will be able to attend classes.  As with students who have not been fully vaccinated, these students will have to be masked in the classrooms and in other group settings in which social distancing is not possible and will be required to submit to periodic COVID testing throughout the semester, or until fully vaccinated.
  1. Does the vaccination requirement apply to students participating in athletics at Alfred University?
    The vaccination requirement applies to all students, including student-athletes at Alfred University.
