Topics for each day:

Monday - Word Choice, Description and Metaphor
Tuesday - Narrators, Characters, and Conflict
Wednesday - Audience, Voice, and Point of View
Thursday - Poetic Form, Dialogue, Prose Poetry
Friday - Taking the Adventure with you; journaling; other writing exercises. Possibly followed by a reading of the week's work.

We will begin each morning with an exercise that will help us focus on the various topics that come up in any kind of writing: narrator, voice, metaphor, setting. We will use that writing as a springboard into creation: it may be a poem, a story, a scene in a play. We will discuss word choice, organization, point of view, and anything else that arises. Bring in any questions you have! I will bring in readings that will help you see the many directions writing can go. You will help me lead the way.

Since our time together is so brief, think of this as a chance to get to know what author Natalie Goldberg refers to as your own "writing mind." Use this time to question and experiment, knowing any of the pieces you create may be the beginning of something larger, which you can continue after the MostArts Festival ends.

Heather Hallberg Yanda, an Alfred University graduate, earned her MFA in poetry from Western Michigan University and has taught at Alfred University for 19 years.
