Alfred University uses community-based forum to respond to Las Vegas tragedy

Members of the Alfred University community, though they may have not been directly impacted by the mass shooting at a Las Vegas country music festival Sunday, nonetheless have strong feelings about the senseless act of violence. On Wednesday, students, faculty and staff were given an opportunity to respond to the tragedy by participating in a community-based art project.

“The devastation from Maria was intense,” reports Edgard Rivera-Valentin ’08. A staff planetary scientist at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, Rivera-Valentin has been able to communicate, sporadically, through Facebook since disaster struck his island home two weeks ago on Sept. 20.

Donations sought to help people in Puerto Rico affected by hurricane

Four people with connections to Puerto Rico – three of them Alfred University alumni; another affiliated with the University’s New York City-based program – are appealing for assistance for those recovering from devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.

Alfred University will host the New York State Geological Association’s (NYSGA) 89th annual Field Conference this weekend. Organizers are Michele Hluchy and Otto Muller, professors of Geology in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University.

An article written by Emrys Westacott, professor of philosophy at Alfred University, has been published in the Fall 2017 issue of Humanities, the magazine of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Kelly Lounsberry, the director of the Pioneer Oil Museum in Bolivar, NY, will describe “The History of Oil in Allegany County” at this week’s Environmental Studies Speakers Series, scheduled for 12:20 p.m. Friday in Roon Lecture Hall, the Science Center at Alfred University.
