We admire - and are inspired by - people who make the right choices for the right reasons at the right time. They are generous but appropriately cautious. Robert ’49 and Elaine Whitford are inspiring in precisely that way. Bob and Elaine were inducted into the Founders Society this spring in recognition of their significant contributions to the Score One for AU athletics campaign. But how they came to make such an impact is as important as the impact itself. It all started in 1992 when Bob and Elaine established a charitable remainder trust. This trust provided payments they could rely on for as long as they needed. And by naming AU as the ultimate beneficiary, they knew they’d make an impact at AU in the future. By 2011, realizing the stability of their financial situation and inspired by the Score One for AU athletics campaign, they decided to dissolve the trust so it could benefit AU today. Bob and his daughter, Kathy Whitford Raneri '71, are shown in the photo. Bob and Kathy are part of a multi-generational Alfred family. Bob had an aunt and three uncles who attended AU, and he was followed by his daughter Kathy; her husband Pete Ranieri '67, and their daughter, Jennifer Ranieri, who earned her MBA from Alfred in 2002.
