Artist Laura Splan to Visit Alfred University Feb. 20-24
Alfred University’s Institute for Electronic Arts will host artist Laura Splan Feb. 20-24 for an artist residency.
Splan, who received her MFA at Mills College, Oakland, Ca., explores intersections of art, science, technology and craft. She has recently been using her own body to generate bio-data that she uses in the production of sculptures and images. The project has evolved into a variety of materials and formats, including computerized jacquard woven tapestries and 3D printed sculptures.
While at Alfred University, Splan will create computer-generated animated weavings from bio-data collected via Arduino microcontrollers. The waveforms generated from the data will be used in AfterEffects and other software with animation, sound, parenting, and expressions to create animated weavings that visualize and embody the experiences from which they were derived.
The Institute for Electronic Art’s Visiting Artist Program is sponsored in part by the New York State council on the Arts.
