Inspired by pop-up books, Matthew Shlian creates paper sculptures
Work by Matthew Shlian ’02, an artist/paper engineer, is featured in the on-line magazine, Creators.
He “started down the dark path of paper,” Shlian told author D.J. Pangburn, when Anne Currier, professor of ceramic art and one of his advisors, gave him a pop-up book. As an undergraduate in Alfred University’s School of Art & Design, Shlian said he originally focused on ceramics, but soon found himself “interested in everything – glass, painting, sound and performance.”
Shlian, who taught at the University of Michigan for eight years, now has a studio in Ann Arbor. His work was featured in an exhibition at the National Academy of Sciences from Aug. 15, 2016-Jan. 16, 2017.
