‘The British Are Humming:’ Alfred University’s choral concert features work by British composers

The Alfred University Chorus, which includes faculty, staff, students and members of the community, will present “The British Are Humming,” a selection of work by British composers, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church in the Village of Alfred.

            The chorus is under the direction of Boris VanDruff, adjunct music instructor in the Division of Performing Arts at Alfred University.

            The program opens with “April is in My Mistress’ Face” by Thomas Morley and “Weep, O Mine Eyes” by John Bennett.

            The Alfred Volunteer Choir Company will perform two works, “If Ye Love Me,” by Thomas Tallis, and “Ave Verum Corpus” by William Byrd.

            Selections from “Dido and Aeneas” by Henry Purcell will be featured, including “Dido’s Lament: When I Am Laid to Earth,” with Rebecca Weaver Hamm as soloist, followed by “With Drooping Wings Ye Cupids Come.”

            Soprano Julie Mulryan will perform a solo in “Magnificat in G Major” by Charles Villier Stanford.

            “Hallelujah!” from George Francis Handel’s “Messiah,” follows, along with “Fields of Gold” by contemporary musician Sting.

            The Alfred Volunteer Choir Company will perform “O Be Joyful in the Lord” by John Rutter and the evening’s program closes with a medley from “Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Soloists include Melanie Meighan, Erin Dunne, Nickolette Jones, Jenepher Estrella, Richard DeFabrizio and Mulryan.

            Sopranos include students Kyla DeSouza, Sadie Holbrook, Nickolette Jones, Jenna Metera, Julie Mulryan, Erin Siebert, Olivia Vesneske and Akeyla Wallace; faculty members Cecelia Beach and Laurel Buckwalter and community members Emma Brown-Shaklee and Erin Dunne.

            Altos are students Niki Croom, Jenepher Estrella, Louisa Holbrook, Melanie Meighan, Hannah Paas, Marissa Ramirez and Andrea Sage, and community members Helena Aldrich, Josephine Bennett-Barnard and Jennifer Breeze-Schultze.

            Tenors are students Richard Beam, Richard DeFabrizio, Louis Jarzabek, Raymond Ortega and Seth Powell; faculty members Alix Clare and Nancy Furlong; and community member John Buckwalter.

            Singing bass are students Anthony Acosta, Kevin Dandrade, Peter Hoskins, Kevin Kwok, Will Latour, Chance Olivias, Darien Orange, Jakob Perez, Jamie Vaughan-Williams and Nicholas Weikle; retired faculty member Tom McDowell and community members Blake Mayo and Joseph Tecza.
