Gene, Kathy Bernstein pledge $2 million for scholarship fund
Alfred University alumnus Gene Bernstein ’69, a long-time member of the University’s Board of Trustees and Chair Emeritus, and his wife, Kathy, have become the latest Heritage Circle members through a bequest commitment of $2 million toward their previously endowed scholarship fund.
Alfred University President Mark Zupan announced the bequest this week, in addition to thanking Bernstein’s siblings with their contribution of $100,000 to the scholarship fund, which Gene and Kathy Bernstein had previously established.
“Kathy and I have a deep appreciation for Alfred University and how it changes lives,” Bernstein said. “It is a catalyst educating the whole student, encouraging independent thought, and raising social awareness—all within a deeply caring family environment. It is our pleasure to make this commitment and give back to a place that has inspired so many and will undoubtedly do so in the future.”
Zupan added his own appreciation: “Please join me in thanking Gene’s siblings and Gene and Kathy for their wonderful philanthropic commitments to our University and to so many future generations of our students.”
Zupan also noted Alfred University has raised $23.5 million in gifts and commitments in the 2016-17 academic year – the second highest total in the history of Alfred University in terms of philanthropic investment.
