Alfred University trustee to welcome new students at opening convocation
Alfred University will mark the beginning of its 182nd year, welcoming new students to campus Thursday, Aug. 24. Returning students will arrive over the weekend and classes will begin Aug. 28.
Opening convocation, long a tradition on the Alfred University campus, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, in the Galanis Family Arena, McLane Center. This year’s speaker is Trustee Christine Heckle, a three-time graduate of the Inamori School of Engineering.
Heckle, who earned her bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering in 1992, went on to earn a master’s in glass science in 1995 and a Ph.D. degree in 1998.
Employed by Corning Incorporated since 1997, Heckle was named director for inorganic materials research in September 2015; prior to that, she had been director of crystalline materials research where she led the development of new ceramic products to support the environmental technologies and specialty materials segments of the business.
She has won numerous awards for her leadership, particularly for advocating diversity. She was elected to the Alfred University Board of Trustees earlier this year.
Heckle is the daughter of Alfred University alumni Pamela Tinnes Lord ’68 and Harold W. Lord, Jr. ’69, and is married to Darryl Heckle, a 1996 alumnus who is a product line manager at Corning Incorporated. They reside in Corning with their two children.
