Rockin’ it at Alfred University: NYS Geological Association to hold 89th annual field conference
Alfred University will host the New York State Geological Association’s (NYSGA) 89th annual Field Conference this weekend. Organizers are Michele Hluchy and Otto Muller, professors of Geology in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University.
This will mark the first time in about 60 years that the annual conference will be held in the Southern Tier, said Hluchy. “We are looking forward to introducing people to the geology in this general region.
As might be expected from the title, the conference attendees participate in a series of field trips to geologically interesting sites, choosing from among five or six on Saturday and another five or six on Sunday. One of the featured field trips is “Exploring the Surficial Geology and Hydrology Near Alfred, NY.,” led by Muller.
The conference will also include workshops on Friday night and again on Sunday.
Muller will be the speaker at Saturday’s annual banquet in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center on the Alfred University campus. He’s compiled a database of all NYSGA field trips from 1956 to 1999 and will explain how to access that information.
The annual conference attracts professionals, faculty and students from throughout New York State, and sometimes from adjoining states, Hluchy said.
