Alfred University’s Shank earns reining judge’s card
ALFRED, NY – Steve Shank, director of the Equestrian Program at Alfred University, has earned judging certification from the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA).
With the certification, Shank can judge at the highest levels of reining competition. To obtain his judge’s card, Shank successfully completed NRHA judges’ school, passed a comprehensive test, and then passed a Board of Directors review.
Only 30 individuals are allowed to apply to take the exam each year in the United States, placing Shank in elite company.
“There are only about 200 certified judges in the United States and approximately 300 total worldwide. Steve is the sixth approved judge in New York State,” said Harry Hurd, head coach of the Alfred University Western equestrian team. “Besides the rule book testing and live judging tests, a candidate’s integrity has to be on the highest level. Needless to say, we are all very proud of Steve for this accomplishment.”
Shank has been director of the Alfred University Equestrian Program since July 2015. He also serves as an assistant coach for the University’s intercollegiate Western equestrian team, a post he has held since 2014.
