ALFRED, NY – Alfred University and Alfred State College honored students, faculty and staff who dedicate their time to improving their communities. Honorees were recognized at the eighth annual Spirit of Service Awards Ceremony on Jan. 30 at Union University Church in Alfred.

Each year at the ceremony, Alfred University and Alfred State present a student, faculty or staff member(s), and a community member or group with Spirit of Service Awards. The awards recognize and celebrate people who demonstrate a strong commitment to serving others.

This year’s honorees from Alfred University included: John Hosford, art librarian at Scholes Library, and Tim Cox, Gertz Associate Professor of English (Faculty and Staff Spirit Award); and Elvira Rodriguez (Student Spirit Award). The Allegany-Cattaraugus-Chautauqua Fund for Women was the honoree from the community.

Other nominees from AU considered were: Donald Cinque, volunteer and member of the Employee Advisory Board, Career Development Center, and Becky Prophet, professor of theater (faculty and staff); and Beryl Torthe and Elizabeth Benedict (students).

The Spirit of Service Award Ceremony isn’t the only joint community service-oriented initiatives the two institutions are involved in. Alfred University, Alfred State and Houghton College come together each year for Celebrate Service, Celebrate Allegany, a day of service event in which student volunteers take part in community projects throughout Allegany County.

Over the last five years, more than 2,000 students have participated in Celebrate Service, Celebrate Allegany, investing more than 12,000 hours of service to Allegany County communities during the annual day of service alone. Celebrate Service, Celebrate Allegany is scheduled each year on Make a Difference Day, the largest single national day of community service.
