Zweygardt’s outdoor sculpture purchased and installed in botanical garden in Florida
LAKELAND, FL -- Glenn Zweygardt, emeritus professor of sculpture at the New York State College of Ceramic at Alfred University, recently had a 2017 sculpture purchased by the city of Lakeland and installed in Hollis Garden, a renowned botanical garden in the city.
The sculpture, Verde Columns, was created by Zweygardt in his studio on Route 21 in Alfred Station. It was one of three sculptures that he entered in the 2018 Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Another sculpture, Global Marker, was also accepted and placed on Lemon Street in downtown Lakeland.
Verde Columns, made of a green Vermont marble, Verde Antique, has multiple glass eyes and bronze sculpted points of interest, and stands nine feet tall.
During the 2017 competition, Zweygardt had two sculptures, Out of the Earth I & II, on exhibit with other competitors’ sculptures along the Lemon Street promenade. These two sculptures were accepted in Winter Haven’s 2018 invitational along with Ancestral Tree I (shown in Alfred at the bus stop) and Ancestral Tree II. All four of these sculptures installed on Feb. 23 will be on view until early 2019.
Likewise, Global Marker will be displayed until early 2019. Verde Columns is now a part of Hollis Garden’s permanent collection.
