Abstract: Although a third world country, Sri Lanka has a 92% literacy rate, one of the highest rates in South Asia. The present educational system of Sri Lanka has derived from the British educational system, as a result of the British colonial period that lasted from 1796 to 1948. In this talk, an introduction to the education system of Sri Lanka will be given briefly. In addition, it will also be discussed how the Covid-19 pandemic affected school education in Sri Lanka. Further, some experiences of a few teachers in both government and international schools will be shared as to how they coped with online teaching.
Bio: Dr. Gaya Jayakody is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura- Sri Lanka. She is a passionate educator of mathematics with over 20 years of experience in secondary school mathematics teaching in Sri Lanka and 7 years of university teaching in Canada and Sri Lanka. She obtained her PhD in Mathematics Education from Canada. She is involved in various activities related to mathematics education such as conducting teacher training programs for primary and secondary school teachers, working as a resource person for various educational seminars and workshops, writing to newspapers and speaking in public platforms advocating conceptual learning of Mathematics. She is also a GMP ambassador.
