Juneteenth Celebration at Veterans Park

The Committee for Religious and Racial healing will be sponsoring a Juneteenth Celebration at Veterans Park (formerly known as James Street Park) in Hornell from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, June 17.

Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery in te United States. On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves were now free. Juneteenth has long been celebrated in the Black community. As of 2022, Juneteenth became a national holiday.

The Juneteenth Celebration in Hornell will include some brief historical talks, a re-enactment of the original Juneteenth, performances, games, and other activities. The event is free and open to everyone. The Committee for Racial and Religious Healing hopes that this will become an annual celebration.
