Exploration of Expanded Media Camp - The Art of Sound, Video and Digital Print Making for High School Students

Students may attend any or all of the camps listed above. The cost of one week of camp is $910 (which includes a $100 deposit). If you select more than one camp the cost is discounted and only one deposit of $100 is required. See online application for details
During the first morning of each of these camps, there will be an introduction to the studio, the tools, the facilities and a brief safety demonstration. Throughout the week there will be an emphasis placed on the creation of a body of your own work and the exploration of each new media. As each day begins you will be given a new set of tools and materials with which to explore and work with. The greater part of the day will be spend working with these media in order to start creating images directed toward the development of your own ideas. At the end of each week you will have created a portfolio of work to take with you and to build on. These courses will parallel college classes though geared for high school students. Group critiques and individual meetings will further the development of your concepts and ideas. We will, as a component part of the class, introduce you to artists who are working in the various media that you are working in.
Sound - June 24-29
During this week, the "Sound Media Camp" will focus on analog synthesis, digiiital synthesis and electroacoustic combinations of the two in the production of immersive surround sound compositions. Campers will learn how sound will vary from abstract and textual to real world and locational recordings. Artists studied will include Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, Bjork and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Video - July 1-6
The "Video Media Camp" will be an introduction to techniques, aesthetics and history of video art to understand everything from the moving celluloid image to glitched pixels in video. The camper will experience how translated optics and digital sensing can aid in recording the moment through watching film and video artworks. We will record video using both studio and location shooting techniques, applying visual effects and composting. Campers will also experience editing and mapping video footage in a spatial-temporal event using compositions. Campers will explore audio-visual relationships, sculpting time by means of light, lens, pixel, sensor and sound to create finished works.
Traditional and Experimental Print Media - July 8-13
This camp is focused on image making and image processing in relation to experiencing a broad range of printmaking processes and forms. It provides an introduction to the tools, technologies and concepts necessary to develop the skills to make images within a contemporary print framework. Practices including woodcut, etching, lithography, mono-prints and new digital ink-jet print technologies will be investigated. Print images will evolve by working with a combination of hand and digital processes with ink and with computer software, thus allowing the print to be understood as both physical and electronic processes. An emphasis will be placed on the idea of challenging the traditional materials, processes and tools used to create printed images. Ideas inherent to the process of printmaking such as reproduction, translation, synthesis, remixing, proofing, recombination and collage form the basis for discussion and inquiry.
Large Format Digital Print Media - July 15-20
Contemporary art making has been profoundly impacted by new digital technologies. This course focuses on how digital print media informs and evolves visual language for artistic expression. Providing each camper with a hands-on opportunity to explore large-format digital printing technologies, this course is designed to help create a context in which to ask questions about the nature of dynamic media relative to the making of contemporary printed images. Further experimentation across media will be investigated. These media may include drawing, painting, photography, video and internet interfaces and will utilize large format ink-jet technology, laser cutting, vinyl cutting and digital drawing.
Who can attend?
Each camp is designed for anyone interested in learning more about expanded media and how it is used in everyday life. The camp is open to high school students entering grades 9-12.
Campers must arrive between 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Sunday (each week) for registration and will leave after lunch on Friday. During the week they will atend classes during the day and have fun participating in planned recreational activities on and off campus when not in class. View sample schedule.
Examples of Evening Activities:
- Ice-breaker games on the first day to help everyone get acquainted
- Movies in AU's Nevins Theater
- Visits to a nearby lake for picnics and campfires
- Outdoor games such as "Capture the Flag" and "Ultimate Frisbee"
- Indoor games such as "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," ping pong, board games, basketball, etc.
- Social gatherings with refreshments & music in the "Knight Club"
- Relaxing and socializing at a local coffee house
- Farewell party on the last night
Further information, including a detailed program schedule and driving directions to campus, will be sent to all students upon acceptance. Note: While the weather in Alfred in June is usually very good, we cannot guarantee clear skies and there will be no refunds due to weather conditions.
When students are not in class, they are supervised by our wonderful team of Camp Counselors who are specially trained to serve as positive role models, mentors and friends. In order to ensure everyone has a safe, healthy and enjoyable time on campus, summer students are expected to abide by the University's summer programs rules and regulations.
Housing and Meals:
Students stay in secure University residence halls dedicated to summer campers (2 per room) and must bring their own pillows, blankets and bed/bath linens for the week (bed linens must fit the extra-long twin residence hall beds). Males and females are housed in separate buildings. Laundry facilities are available in each hall at no charge. Our Camp Counselors will be on-site in the residence halls at all times.
Delicious, all-you-can-eat, cafeteria-style meals are served in our University dining hall. Our Dining Services chefs do an excellent job in accommodating campers with food allergies and other special requirements.
Tuition, Room and Board:
The cost per individual camp is $910.00. This includes a non-refundable $100 deposit. This covers tuition, supervision, program materials & equipment, take-home projects, recreational activities, room and board from dinner from the first day through lunch on the last day. Students may choose to attend any or all of the 4 week camps ($910 for one week; $1795 to attend any 2 camps; $2700 to attend any 3 camps; $3500 to attend all four). The $100 deposit must be submitted with the application (paid only once); deadline May 1, 2018 with remaining balance due June 1, 2018.
Students livinng locally who wich to attend as commuters may do so. The commuter rate, which includes tuition, program materials, take-home projects and lunch is $810 per camp week ($1695 to commute to any 2 camps; $2600 for 3 camps and $3400 for all 4). Students who wish to commute must check in at registration on Sunday (2:00-4:00 PM) and arrive on campus by 8:45 AM for classes Monday-Thursday. They must be picked up no later than 5:00 PM Monday-Thursday unless they will be participating in evening activities (please make arrangements with the Director of Summer Programs for pick-up times/locations). The last day of camp (Friday), pick-up time is 1:00 PM. Please be sure to check the "Commuter" box on the application form.

After the May 1 deadline, students will receive via email their acceptance letter which will include instructions on where to find and download the materials required to attend camp, including medical forms, liability releases, emergency notification forms, etc. These materials must be filled out as soon as possible and must be back in our hands no later than June 1, 2018. Updated immunization information (including dates) is also required at that time. (If you do not have updated immunization information on hand, you may want to acquire this from your physician now to avoid processing delays.) If you require an earlier decision, please indicate this by including a note with your application form. (Students who apply after the deadline will receive notification within one week after we receive their application materials.)
Refunds, less the $100 non-refundable deposit, will be made for cancellations received by June 1. 50% refunds will be made for cancellations received from June 2-9, 2018. No refunds are given for cancellations received after June 9.

If a program is canceled or postponed, the University will refund registration fees, but cannot be held responsible for other costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies.
Rebekkah Palov has a background in cinema with art practice in music, video, digital-print and performance. Her screen and sound work has been exhibited internationally including exhibition at Anthology Film Archives in NYC, Mass MoCA Boston, The STONE NYC, Oblo Film Festival Lausanne Switzerland, AMODA - Austin, TX, Harvestworks, NYC, SoundFjord Gallery, London UK, and Digital Art Weeks in Zurich Switzerland. She also is a member of "Carrier Band" (IEA Records) and her on-screen performance credits include "The Lollipop Generation," a film by G.B. Jones, and "Catalog," a film by Stephanie Barber. Palov is a media arts writer and researcher on the history electronic arts, in particular, the work of Harald Bode b. 1909. She is a professor at Kutztown University where she runs the Time-Based/Experimental Media art program.
William Contino has lived and worked in New York, Baltimore and London. He received his BFA from Alfred University in 1984 and MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1988. William has taught at The School of Arty and Design at Alfred University beginning in 1991 as an assistant professor, working in both the Graduate Electronic Integrated Arts program and the printmaking department. Moving to London in 1997, he continued to teach drawing and painting at the American School in London. In 2003 he returned to Western New York and continues to teach at Alfred University in the Expanded Media Division as professor of printmaking. He has exhibited work in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally and continues a studio practice involving a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, sound and video.

The campus, a 6-hour drive from New York City, 2 hours from Buffalo and 1 1/4 hours from Rochester, is easily accessible by car or bus from all directions and is located just five miles south of Interstate 86. The nearest major airport is the Rochester International Airport (about 65 miles north). Transportation to and from that airport can be provided for an additional charge if we receive your request by the date indicated in your acceptance notification. After that date students must make their own arrangements with an airport limo service.
