Family Resources

Parents and Family as Partners

Family connections are critical to today's college students. With our shared goals of student success, Alfred University faculty and staff view family as partners in preparing students for life after college. For more information, continue reading our Family Philosophy statement below.

Fostering Independence

The desire to advocate for your student is normal and natural, and we welcome questions from families. However, we work directly with our students in exploring situations of concern so that they can learn to manage conflict and advocate for themselves.

Degree Evaluation

Is your student on the right path to ensure on-time graduation? Here's the degree evaluation tool you can recommend for them, available in their Banner self-service menu.

Before Contacting Us

Be sure to ask your student to get in touch with the appropriate faculty or staff member to start the discussion prior to contacting us. If your student doesn't know where to begin, the Dean of Student Experience, Thomas Orrange, is available as a starting point.

Privacy

The University is required to abide by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and cannot reveal protected information without a student's permission. It is important for you to discuss and clarify your expectations for sharing information. Learn more about FERPA.

At Alfred University we value a community environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and growth, promotes and models good citizenship, encourages enlightened leadership and respects everyone. Your student is learning to become an independent thinker and self-advocate. We will educate them to explore the opportunities available to them, make decisions and learn from them, and take responsibility for their own learning. We ask that you support your student’s developmental process by encouraging their dialogue with us in solving problems and expressing ideas.

While it may seem easier in the short run to "solve the problem" for your student when asked for help, the student doesn't always learn from that how to manage conflict or advocate for themselves. We ask that before you contact us, you ask your student to get in touch with the appropriate faculty or staff member to start the discussion.

In most cases, you will learn about your students' accomplishments, grades, judicial violations, physical health, or mental health concerns from them, or from a faculty or staff member only with the student’s knowledge and consent. We encourage you to discuss with your student your expectations for sharing that information with you.
