Enid Borden ’72, former president and chief executive officer of Meals on Wheels and the founder and chief executive of the not-for-profit National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, urged Alfred University students to take risks, dare to dare, and not be afraid of failure in the keynote address for Alfred University’s second Mentorship Day, held Friday, Oct. 3.

Alfred University’s second Mentorship Day, held Oct. 3, was a resounding success, bringing together more than 250 students and dozens of university alumni who returned to the campus to share expertise and job tips with undergraduates.

The Sports and Health Sciences major at Alfred University is quickly becoming one of the most dynamic programs on campus, offering students a strong foundation in healthcare and preparing them for a variety of career paths. With multiple tracks, hands-on learning, and a supportive community, the program equips students with both the knowledge and experience to succeed in the health sciences field.

Alfred University hosted the third annual Night of Science and Arts on Thursday, Oct. 2. Approximately 500 families from the region—including the Corning, Wellsville, Bath, Hornell, and Geneseo areas—spent the evening on campus, taking part in a variety of fun events and demonstrations focused on science, engineering, and the arts.

Alfred University was well represented at the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) Conference, held last week in Columbus, OH. Twenty Alfred undergraduate and graduate students and nine faculty/staff from the Inamori School of Engineering participated the four-day conference, which opened Sunday, Sept. 28 and concluded Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Alfred University Assistant Professor of Sociology Meredith Field grew up in rural Pennsylvania where annual harvest traditions formed a social anchor for community. She is exploring the sociology of those harvests in her First Year Experience class, The Sociology of Food, and she recently invited her students, Alfred University faculty and administrators, and friends in the larger Alfred community to an autumn cookout (“Soupstock 2025”) in her Alfred village backyard – invoking some of the traditions of her youth.

Alexis “Alix” Clare, emeritus professor of glass science at Alfred University, was named recipient of the 2025 Women in Glass Award. She was presented the award on Tuesday, Oct. 7, during the 86th Glass Problems Conference in Toledo, OH.

The Alfred Cup, an annual year-long competition between varsity sports teams from Alfred University and Alfred State College, continues on Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Alfred University women’s volleyball visits Alfred State for a 4 p.m. contest at the Orvis Gymnasium.
