Zoey Keagle, a junior dual ceramic engineering-art and design major at Alfred University, helps give a demonstration on microwave sintering of lunar simulant (artificial moon dust). The demonstration was part of an informational program on Friday, Feb. 28, on research being done by the university’s Space Materials Institute, for which Zoey serves as an intern. The Space Materials Institute is developing new materials and processes that enable different aspects of space exploration, in collaboration with Alfred University faculty, staff, and students as well as government agency and industry partners. Research area examples include materials that enable or enhance space operations; materials processing off planet; and materials analysis and characterization. The Feb. 28 program included presentations given by student researchers as well as industry experts.

Alfred University students Marcella “Marce” Peccorini and Elijah Spence Hammarlund have been selected to receive the 2025 Marlin Miller Outstanding Senior Award. The pair were chosen from among 30 exceptional nominees for the prestigious honor.

Alfred University’s GE Vernova Advanced Power Grid Laboratory is set to receive a state-of-the-art grid control and distributed energy system on April 15, marking a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to lead research in renewable energy integration, microgrid technology, and grid modernization.
