The United States Postal Service has released its new stamp series Luna Moth, based on a print produced in 2001 by Alfred University Art Professor Emeritus Joseph Scheer '84. The stamp will be available in panes of 20 at post offices and on usps.com.
Scheer created the image by making high-resolution digital scans of the moth from a variety of angles and using composites of the scanned images to create a final print. The Luna Moth is the first USPS stamp to be based on artwork created at Alfred University.
Scheer earned a B.F.A. from Alfred University in 1984 and served as a professor of printmaking at his alma mater from 1989 until his retirement in 2024. He continues to practice the art of printmaking at his studio.
