The Division of Painting and Drawing at Alfred University is proud to present Window Seat, a curated exhibition of work by alumni from the Alfred/Düsseldorf MFA in Painting program. Featuring artists from each graduating class, the exhibition at the Cohen Gallery opens Friday, May 23 and reflects on the individual and collective journeys of these emerging voices since leaving Alfred.
This unique international MFA program—anchored between Alfred, New York, and Düsseldorf, Germany—provides students with a rare opportunity to engage directly with both American and European art communities. The result is a globally informed cohort of artists who continue to shape their practices around the world.
Window Seat invites viewers to contemplate themes of travel, identity, close observation, and the metaphor of the “window” as a frame for reflection, curiosity, and possibility. The works explore and challenge the material traditions of painting, pushing the boundaries of surface and form, and often dissolving the line between abstraction and representation.
This two-year program is anticipated to be highly competitive; seven Painting students are admitted annually. Students spend two semesters at Alfred University's home campus and two semesters at our studio facility in Düsseldorf, Germany. Select teaching assistantships are awarded.
