Today, Alfred University honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a tireless champion of justice, equality, and nonviolence. Reflecting on his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, we remember his unwavering belief that "peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal."
Dr. King showed us that the fight for civil rights is a struggle not just of laws, but of hearts. His call to embrace love over hate, justice over oppression, and action over apathy continues to guide us today. His vision reminds us that the arc of history bends toward justice only when we act with courage and conscience.
Inspired by Dr. King's vision of the Beloved Community, we embrace the ARC of Discomfort:
* Awareness - recognizing the injustices that persist in our world.
* Noticing Difference - understanding the experiences of those who are unheard.
* Choosing Action - committing to acts of courage and compassion to create positive change.
At Alfred University, we honor Dr. King not only by remembering his words but by living them. Guided by the ARC of Discomfort, we turn reflection into meaningful action and service. Today, we celebrate a Day of Service, a chance to strengthen our community, lift others, and continue the work of equality, justice, and love that he inspired.
As we remember his courage and leadership, let us recommit ourselves to building a world-and a university community-where dignity, equality, and compassion are the foundation for all. By embracing awareness, noticing difference, and choosing action, we carry forward Dr. King's dream and honor it in every step we take.
