AU's Universal Design for Learning Task Force is pleased to share weekly tips to help faculty and staff provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of differences that may impact learning. This week's tip is:
Keyboard Shortcuts in Canvas
It is important that all web-based content be navigable and accessible using only a keyboard. Some individuals with motor or visual disabilities are unable to use a mouse, and rely on using the keyboard for all navigation tasks. Some people without disabilities simply prefer to use keyboard shortcuts to navigate (example: using the Tab key to move to the next field while filling out an online form).
Many of AU's supported tools and programs allow users to navigate using only a keyboard. To ensure accessibility, it is recommended that you test your content by navigating through it with the keyboard alone. The Canvas Accessibility Standards (linked below) include information on keyboard shortcuts in Canvas.

Episode 10, April 9, Corey Fecteau Artist Panel: Nature as Collaborator.
Our earliest examples of art frequently use natural materials to depict subjects from the natural world. As we navigate the realities of anthropogenic climate change and our destabilizing world, some artists are (re)turning to the oldest human technologies. From sculpting and printing with mushrooms to drawing with charcoal made from invasive species and more, these artists incorporate nature as both subject and co-author in their work. This panel discussion by alumnx artists will be moderated by Corey Fecteau '01, artist and Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Bergren Forum - Spring 2026 The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, runs 12:15-1:10 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center and by zoom. Bring a brown bag lunch if you wish. Coffee and tea will be provided. For further information contact or a calendar invite with the zoom link, contact John D'[email protected]

We are quickly approaching our June 30th fiscal year end date. Considering that, the Procurement Office asks that you are mindful of quoted lead-times when submitting requisitions using Fiscal Year 2026 funding. If the item(s) that you order now do not arrive and we do not have an invoice for them by June 30th, then the money spent will not count in this fiscal year.
Furniture purchases and purchases for custom or larger scale equipment could potentially have lead-times that would force their purchase into the next fiscal year. The Procurement Office is happy to help facilitate conversations with suppliers, but honestly cannot promise that items like this will be here before the fiscal year ends. As much as manufacturers try to deliver on time, the fact is that sometimes they ship late. There is nothing that we can do if the items arrive after June 30th other than charging the expense to the next fiscal year.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss the feasibility of any current fiscal year purchases, please reach out to the Procurement Office.
Thank you.

The Alfred University Office of Public Safety reminds motorists to park in designated parking areas throughout campus.
If you're unsure where parking is permitted, please refer to our Vehicle Regulations and Parking Map.
The university also asks that motorists avoid parking in front of dumpsters. Blocked dumpsters prevent the refuse collection company from emptying them and can cause service delays. Public Safety will continue to issue parking violations as needed.

A student-led project is developing a potential app designed to solve two everyday campus problems: finding reliable transportation and buying or selling items.
The platform would bring both services into one place: allowing students to connect for rides and easily trade within the campus community. Instead of relying on scattered group chats or multiple apps, this solution is built specifically for student needs.
Although still in development, the team has already launched a demo website that showcases how the platform would function, including its core features and user experience. A waitlist is currently open on the website for students interested in early access and updates.
The project is backed by strong institutional support, with involvement from the President's Office, Provost's Office, Registrar's Office, Student Experience, and ITS, highlighting both demand for the solution and its potential campus-wide impact.
A key feature of the platform is its focus on safety and accountability. It is designed to be strictly university-verified, meaning only confirmed members of the campus community would have access. The app would also include a clear review and reporting system, with reports instantly directed to university representatives. This structure significantly discourages misconduct, as violations can be addressed quickly and may lead to institutional consequences.
The idea was driven by common student challenges: limited transportation options and no centralized marketplace. By addressing both in one system, the project aims to create a more efficient, connected, and accountable campus environment.
Students interested in following the project or getting early access are encouraged to join the waitlist through the demo website!

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Community Members,
You are invited to take part in a powerful and meaningful experience as a Human Book for our upcoming Human Library event, hosted by the President's Committee on Inclusivity at Alfred University.
Event Details:
Monday, April 20
11:20 AM - 1:10 PM
Herrick Memorial Library (Bookend & First Floor)
Snacks will be provided
Theme:
"Cautionary Tales: Building Empathy Through Lived Experience"
We are seeking volunteers willing to share personal stories that reflect moments when life didn't go as planned experiences that shaped who you are today.
These might include:
A time your life changed direction unexpectedly
Overcoming adversity or significant challenges
A choice you would approach differently now
Thinking you had everything figured out only to discover otherwise
As a Human Book, you'll engage in small-group conversations with participants who are eager to listen, learn, and grow through dialogue. Your story can help foster empathy, challenge assumptions, and create meaningful connections across our campus and community.
What to Expect:
A welcoming, respectful environment
Small-group conversations (15-20 minutes each)
The opportunity to set your own boundaries around what you share
Light preparation guidance provided in advance
You do not need to be an expert-just willing to share your authentic experience.
If you are interested in participating as a Human Book, please contact Angie Taylor at [email protected]
Thank you for considering this opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive and understanding community.
Warm regards,
President's Committee on Inclusivity
Alfred University
