Domestic and dating violence are prevalent in all communities, including college communities. One in five college students experienced dating or domestic violence in the last year.
At Alfred University, we are committed to serving all students who are experiencing violence, including domestic and dating violence.
If you are experiencing violence in your relationship or feel that you want help, please use the website, AU Report It, to report to the Title IX Office.
During the month, Alfred University's Rape Crisis Advocate, Christa, will visit campus to provide information to students. She will be in the Powell Campus Center on October 9th, 16th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, and 26th. If you want to meet with Christa while she's on campus, please contact [email protected] to be connected.

The Foreign Language Placement Exam is an online test that is administered in person with proctoring. Online exams can be taken in French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese. Students must PREREGISTER by emailing Prof. Kerry Kautzman ([email protected]). In the email, include the language (French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese) in which you would like to be tested. Modern Languages will offer this test on Tuesday, October 27th from 5:00 - 6:10 p.m. in Seidlin 016. You must pre-register by Tuesday, October 27th 2:00 p.m. Bring your student ID with you to the exam!
Who should take a Placement Exam? Students who have taken more than two years of French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Chinese in high school and who intend to take the same language at AU should take the exam in that language. Students who are bilingual or native speakers of French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Chinese (or who have spoken the language at home) should take the exam in that language.
Who does NOT need to take a Placement Exam? Students who are planning to take French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Chinese in college but have NOT studied that language in High School (or spoken it at home) do not need to take an exam. They should start by taking 101 in their chosen language.
Students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in a language OTHER THAN French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Chinese should contact Prof. Kerry Kautzman ([email protected]) about procedures for taking a Placement Exam through another institution.
PLEASE NOTE: The Foreign Language Placement Exam is online but only offered in person on specific dates during each semester. You must register ahead of time. There is a limit of 15 for each session.

It's Almost Halloween! Let's Talk About Costumes, Culture & Community.
Alfred University is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for ALL. This Halloween, let's celebrate with fun, food, and respect.
Inclusive Costume Check
Before you dress up, ask yourself:
Does my costume perpetuate stereotypes or stigmas?
Does it use clothing or symbols from a culture/religion I don't belong to?
Does it represent a time period now considered offensive?
If you said "YES" to any of these, it's time to rethink.
Do's for Halloween at AU
Be creative, not offensive.
Choose costumes that are fun, spooky, or silly-not harmful.
Enjoy the food & treats without making someone else's culture a costume.
Don'ts for Halloween at AU
No blackface.
No cultural or religious dress used as "costumes."
No stereotypes-ever.
Food & Treats with Inclusion in Mind
When bringing snacks or hosting Halloween events:
Offer nut-free and allergy-friendly options.
Clearly label ingredients to keep everyone safe.
Be mindful of cultural and religious dietary needs (e.g., vegetarian, halal, kosher).
Remember: Treats taste better when everyone can enjoy them!
General Safety Tips
Use reflective materials, carry flashlights or glow sticks, choose light-colored costumes to enhance visibility. Safe Kids Worldwide+2Flock Safety+2
Avoid masks that block vision; face paint is safer. Safe Kids Worldwide+1
Stay on sidewalks, cross at crosswalks, supervise children (especially younger ones). Active Parenting+3Safe Kids Worldwide+3Flock Safety+3
Keep decorations, pumpkins, and cords well-lit and away from walking paths.
Use battery-operated "candles" instead of real flames.
If handing out treats, avoid frightening decorations right at the door; and consider giving non-scary alternatives for sensitivity concerns.
Let's celebrate Halloween with laughter, snacks, and school spirit-while respecting every member of our community.
Have fun. Be safe. Be respectful.

If you're a first-year or transfer student, you'll notice a class called Common Ground on your spring schedule. In this one-credit course, you'll have the kinds of discussions that we see as essential to your education -- about what's going on in the world, what kind of community we want to create, and how to have civil discourse across ideological boundaries. You'll get a chance to meet (and have meaningful conversation with) students with diverse academic interests, backgrounds, and beliefs. Classes only meet once a week for 50 minutes, so it won't add to your academic workload, but it will add value to your AU degree by developing your capacity to work well with others (and it is a university requirement). Classes meet either Wednesdays or Thursdays, 3:20 - 4:10. Because we don't want Common Ground to interfere with the rest of your academic program, we won't assign you to a particular section until you've had a chance to register for your other spring classes. If you have any questions about the Common Ground program, please contact Melissa Ryan, Professor of English, [email protected].
