Please join us to hear this week’s speaker! Dr. Daniel Moscovici give a talk titled “Sustainability and Wine: A Global Analysis and Opportunities for Central New York”.
Daniel is a Professor of Environmental Studies & Sustainability in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Stockton University. His research and educational activities focus on defining, understanding, and evaluating planning options for sustainable outcomes, specifically those that find balance between the economic, environmental, and social perspectives.
The wine industry, worldwide, has been facing environmental, economic, and social challenges. As globalization allows more wine to move around the world, the world wine trade has accelerated, and competition has increased. As this competition grows, a new level of environmental introspection is occurring in the industry. The vine and wine are now seen as an intensive crop and associated with environmental damages. The complexity of the wine life cycle is officially a factor, as wines are evaluated based on their carbon footprints and how this information is labeled and presented to the consumer. Wine is more than just a beverage and the wine industry is under considerable pressure from regulators to evaluate, reduce, and report its environmental and social impacts and to incorporate sustainability and organic processes into management practices.
