New NYS Labor Law in Effect

A new labor law (Section 195.1) is now in effect requiring employees hired into a new position to be given a written notice of their rate of pay, their overtime rate and the regular payday.

The employer and the employee are requried to sign the form and a copy must be provided to the employee. Until we devise a better method to fit this into our current hiring process, we will be asking all new hires to report to the Payroll/Human Resources office to complete the required document.

We appreciate your cooperation as we try to comply with this new regulation.

Thank you for your help!

Thanks to the campus community for supporting our displaced students. If you wish to donate items, please contact studentaffairs@alfred.edu and wait to hear back from us before dropping anything off, so we may try to match donations with individual student needs. Fundraising collections conducted by people on campus can be submitted directly to the Business Office; checks should be payable to Alfred University with a memo stating that it's for fire relief.

On FRIDAY, we will open the Kenyon/Allen room for the student body to take items they may want that are left over, in exchange for donations of any amount for the Fire Relief Fund.

FRIDAY EVENING/SATURDAY the remaining items will be taken to local churches and community organizations for use in our community, coordinated by our Interfaith Advisor, Rev. Laurie DeMott.

Thanks for everything you've done to help our students.

Kathy Woughter, Vice President for Student Affairs

Wit and Wisdom Student Competition

Friends, orators, Alfredians, lend me your ears! Your local chapter of the honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, has created an opportunity for those blessed with the wit and wisdom to deliver an eloquent and stirring address to the community.

Whether you are a creative writer or gifted in writing a scholarly essay, you may compete for the first Wit and Wisdom Award.

The competition for the above award is open to all full-time undergraduate students at Alfred University. To participate in the competition, a student must be on campus for the selection process during Fall Semester and, if selected, must be enrolled as a full-time student and available to deliver the public lecture at the March 4, 2010 Bergren Forum.

A single winner will be selected from among submissions in two categories, creative writing and scholarly essay. Students are welcome to compete in one or both of the categories.

Category of scholarly essay: this category is limited to scholarly or academic essays that would appeal to a general audience of adults. Entries will be judged on the quality and significance of the scholarship and/or research and excellence in writing, as well as the student's skill in oral presentation. The area of scholarship must fall within the general category of the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Technical essays that are not accessible to a general audience will not be accepted. All research included in the essay must be appropriately cited in the written version of the essay.

Category of creative writing: this category includes all genres of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and playwriting. Entries will be judged on originality and excellence in writing, as well as the student's skill in oral presentation.

The length of the entry is limited only by the length of the public lecture, which will be approximately 40 minutes. An essay, for example, should be approximately 10-12 double-spaced pages. When timing a work, students should consider that their public presentation should include comments to help the audience understand the context of the work and time for questions. Any work selected must be appropriate to present to a general audience of adults.

All entries must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at 5 p.m. (EST). Late entries will not be considered. Entries may be submitted electronically to: gray@alfred.edu. Print copies may be sent by campus mail to:

Assistant Professor Juliana Gray, Chair
Wit and Wisdom Selection Committee
English Division - Seidlin Hall

Finalists will be notified by Nov. 20. All finalists will be required to present their work to the panel of judges. The winner will be notified by Dec. 4, 2009.

The winner will present his or her lecture at a Bergren Forum on March 4, 2010, and will be honored with a dinner on campus. The winner will receive an honorarium of $250, which will be awarded on the occasion of the public lecture. The winning work will be featured in the FIAT LUX.

The Career Development Center is looking for one junior or senior from each of the colleges-Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business and Art and Design-to undergo a professional image makeover. You will work with the CDC to develop a unique image or "brand" as a way to present and market yourself to potential employers.

*Position yourself clearly in the minds of others (especially potential employers)
*Project credibility
*Develop loyalty

This image makeover will include a clothing, resume, business card, and portfolio makeover, aided by personalized wardrobe and graphic design consultations.

The image makeover will culminate in a presentation at the annual Etiquette Dinner and Professional Image Show, sponsored by Kohler Co., on Feb. 19, 2010. There is a minimal time commitment necessary, but the experience will be a valuable one--plus you will come away with a stellar resume, portfolio, and some nice clothes!

Can You Donate Something to Save an Animal?

On Thursday, Dec. 3, Pet Pals will be having a Penny Social to raise funds for animals who can't help themselves.

This request is for new or very gently used items that you would be willing to donate to the auction. Since the auction is scheduled before the holiday break, we are hoping to receive quality items that would be a great gift for the winner to give someone on their list! The items need not be animal related or Holiday related. How about a book that everyone wants to read? Maybe some wrapping paper, gift tags, and bows? A game that you know a child would love? These are the type of things we are looking for.

Donations will be accepted at the Center for Student Involvement on the 2nd floor of the Powell Campus Center until Wednesday, Nov. 25. Please consider donating something to make this event a huge success.

Save the Date for the Penny Social! Thursday, Dec. 3, from 4:30- p.m. in the Knight Club.
