Bequests
The easy and flexible approach to supporting Alfred University at any age or income level.

Outright bequest
"I give, devise, and bequeath to Alfred University, a New York educational corporation with principal offices at Saxon Drive, Alfred, New York, 14802, the sum of $ ________, and/or the securities or other property described herein, namely _________________, for use for the benefit of Alfred University as determined by the Board of Trustees."

Or

"I give, devise, and bequeath to Alfred University, a New York educational corporation with principal offices at Saxon Drive, Alfred, New York, 14802, ________ percent of my estate, both real and personal property of whatever kind and wheresoever situated, which I may own or have the right to dispose of at the time of my decease, for use for the benefit of Alfred University as determined by the Board of Trustees."

Contingent Bequests
A contingent bequest provides for Alfred University if other named beneficiaries predecease you.

"In the case of failure or lapse of any legacy or devise herein such that the property so bequeathed or devised would otherwise pass by intestacy (absence of a will), I give, devise, and bequeath any such failed or lapsed legacy or devise to Alfred University, a New York educational corporation, with principal offices at Saxon Drive, Alfred, New York, 14802."

Designating a Bequest
An unrestricted bequest allows Alfred University to use it according to University priorities. However, if you have a special interest that you particularly want to support, you may designate the use of your bequest.

It is in everyone's best interest to describe designated bequests broadly. Times change, and sometimes best intentions can result in a bequest that can't be used for the purpose described.

When drafting a bequest with a restricted purpose, and to ensure that it will always be of maximum use to Alfred University, it is helpful to add an "alternative use" clause such as:

"If, due to changed circumstances, the designated purpose of this bequest becomes inappropriate or impractical, then the University Board of Trustees may modify the purpose as they deem appropriate; provided, however, that the modification adheres as nearly as possible to the my original intentions."
