News Image Figueroa ’06 finds foodies flock to Madrid 8/06/15

Washington Post food writer Geoff Edgers happened upon (Kristiana) Joy Figueroa, AU Class of 2006, when he signed on for a food tour of Madrid touted as away from the city’s main touristy stops. Joy, who moved to Spain a few years ago, was the tour guide for his group.

News Image Work by Rhoads ’01 selected for Seattle Center Sculpture Walk installation 8/06/15

Seattle Center Sculpture Walk, an installation of seven pieces curated by Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture, will open Monday, Aug. 24 and will include a piece by Kait Rhoads, AU Class of 2001. Each of seven artists were selected to design and develop a series of small-scale, temporary artworks which will be installed on city-owned infrastructure or building facades on the Seattle Center Campus through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. The artworks are intended to incite moments of surprise and/or contemplation and enliven the visitor experience by introducing an element of the unexpected into everyday environments throughout Seattle Center.

Ph.D. candidate earns national materials science award 7/27/15

Peter Metz, a Ph.D. candidate in Alfred University’s (AU) Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering, will receive the 2015 Jerome B. Cohen Award from the International Centre for Diffraction Data. The award, along with a $1,000 check, will be presented at the 64th annual Denver X-ray Conference, Aug. 5 in Westminster, CO.

News Image Washington State historian seeks information on WW II insulators 7/23/15

Historian Gerald Elfendahl is collecting resources for a history of a popular public park on Bainbridge Island, WA. He has written seeking information from alumni, former faculty, or friends who may have knowledge of the park, which was a U.S. Navy Radio Transmitter Station during World War II.

In particular, Elfendahl is seeking information on an insulator made by LAPP Insulators, which carried the weight of an 800-foot steel transmitter tower.

News Image Wagner ’95 ‘plants’ one-of-a-kind ‘Glass Lily Garden’ in Michigan gallery exhibition 7/21/15

“Glass Lily Garden,” a solo exhibition “planted” by April Wagner, AU Class of 1995, is “growing” at the North Campus Research Complex at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, through Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015. The exhibition features a variety of glass lilies in vibrant colors displayed in both exhibition cases and on the wall.

There will be a closing reception for the exhibit Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 5-7 p.m., in the Building 18 Lobby. “Glass Lily Garden” is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. The gallery is at 2800 Plymouth Road, Ann Arbor. For more information, please visit: http://ncrc.cms.si.umich.edu

News Image Rhoads ’01 seeking green, plastic bottles for upcoming mega installation in Seattle 7/21/15

Alumnus Wil Wakely, AU Class of 1952, who has maintained contact with glass artist Kait Rhoads, AU Class of 2001, since taking the glass art up in his retirement, sent along news of Kait’s need for plastic green bottles for her upcoming public art piece slated to be installed in the center of Seattle, WA September 2015-January 2016.

News Image Art major earns 'Best of Show' in SUNY-wide exhibition at NYS Museum 7/13/15

Recent Alfred University (AU) graduate Anna Liem earned a Best of Show Award in the Best of SUNY (State University of New York) Student Art Exhibition at the NYS Museum, Albany for her 2014 ceramic piece “Convulsions.”

Liem, of Los Angeles, is one of three statewide winners of a $1,000 scholarship attached to the Best of Show Award.  She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from AU’s the School of Art and Design, College of Ceramics (a statutory unit of SUNY) this past spring. The daughter of Chris and Hee Nam Liem, she is a graduate of Idyllwild Arts Academy.
