Take a look at Foundation class’s open activities
M. Michelle Illuminato, assistant professor, School of Art * Designs writes:

“Last week the Foundation faculty welcomed 120 new incoming freshmen to the B.F.A. program with an exciting workshop titled ‘From Here to There.’ The program was an enormous success and I just wanted to take a moment to tell you a little about it and to share images of our weeklong activities.

We invited Heidi Hendricks and Takaaki Masuko, musicians, visual artists and composers from Boston to conduct a experiential program designed to challenge students’ understanding of what it means to make art, to know one’s self, and to connect to and collaborate with others. They were thoughtful, dynamic and extremely well prepared. Below you will find their description of the workshop.

To give you a glimpse of the first day, imagine entering the studio and receiving a card that said: ‘Welcome. Today is about experiencing your experience. Pick a chair and sit wherever you would like within the room. Listen.’

“Then without introduction or call to order, Taki launches into a performance of Kitchen Music/World Percussion Extravaganza – a musical performance utilizing found objects, kitchen tools, and traditional instruments from around the world; performance has a visual/theatrical element, but is primarily musical/textural.

After the performance students were given one hour to make their own instrument from tables of collected uncommon materials. Take then led the group in a performance using their bodies, voices and instruments. What a first day!

During the rest of the week, through lectures, exercises, games and discussions the students learned more about collaboration, storytelling, and performance. For example, on Wednesday Heidi and Take presented, Hidden Connections: The Tale of Two Storytellers, a lecture and screening of the work of Jim Henson and Krzysztof Kieslowski. Through this, students learned about storytelling, character building, and collaborative techniques.

Students then worked in groups to create their own ‘living characters’, which were preformed using audio and visual elements on the final day. To see images of the process and performance go to our blog: http://alfredfoundations.com/ and click on the flickr image box in the right column.
