International Students : Travel

International students, scholars, faculty, and staff at Alfred University are strongly urged to check with the International Students Office prior to traveling outside of the United States. A staff member will determine if you have all the required documentation for re-entry to the U.S. (e.g., a valid entry visa, a valid passport, required signatures on various forms etc.). Failure to check with a qualified staff member prior to departing the United States may result in difficulties when seeking to re-enter if you do not have all the required documentation. When you are going to be traveling, be sure that your I-20 or DS-2019 has a current signature (within 12 months). If you do need a signature, there are a few DSO's and ARO's that are qualified to sign. Call the Office of International Programs for the names of the officers.

F-1 Students
F-1 students must have a valid passport, valid F-1 visa, and a valid I-20 in order to re-enter the United States. In addition, a Designated School Official (DSO) must endorse page three of the Form I-20. If you are engaged in Optional Practical Training following completion of studies, you will also need a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD Card).

If you will be applying for a new F-1 visa at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate abroad, you will need additional documentation as well.

J-1 Students and Scholars
J-1 students and scholars must have a valid passport, valid J-1 visa, and their DS-2019 form in order to re-enter the United States. In addition, the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) must endorse page 1 towards the bottom of the Form DS-2019.  This signature is valid for 1 year or until the end date on your DS-2019, whichever comes first.  If you will be applying for a new J-1 visa at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate abroad, you will need additional documentation as well.

All Other Visa Classifications
For specific information about travel requirements for all other visa classifications (e.g., H-1B1, TN, B-1/B-2, Permanent Resident, etc.), please contact the Office of International Programs.

Traveling to Canada
Since Alfred is only about 2 hours from the Canadian border, we know that you may want to visit.  In addition to the general international travel guidelines, there are a few specific guidelines for Canadian visits.

Please look well ahead of time to see if you need a visa to travel to Canada.  A list can be found here.  If you find you do need a visa to visit Canada, please contact our office so we can help you with the process.
