Lady Saxons drop Empire 8 Conference opener, 73-36, to visiting Ithaca

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball team lost its Empire 8 Conference opener, falling to visiting Ithaca College, 73-36, Sunday afternoon at the McLane Center.

Alfred (5-3, 0-1 Empire 8) shot only 23 percent from the floor, while the visiting Lady Bombers (6-5, 2-0 Empire 8) made 53 percent of their shots. Ithaca made 55 percent of its first-half shots (to only 15 percent for AU) to jump out to a 29-11 lead at intermission.

Ithaca outrebounded Alfred, 46-31 and shot 74 percent from the free throw line to overcome 27 turnovers. Alfred turned the ball over 28 times and made only eight of 15 foul shot attempts.

Senior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) netted a team-high10 points and added five rebounds and four steals to pace Alfred. Freshman guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) added eight points and junior forward Libby Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) had four steals and five rebounds.

Tracy Bradley led three Ithaca players in double figures with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Jordan Confessore and Lindsay Brown chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. against visiting Elmira.
