AU men’s basketball team defeats Elmira for first Empire 8 Conference win

ALFRED, NY — Senior forward Carl Embury (Perry, NY/Perry) netted a career-high 25 points to lead four players in double figures as the Alfred University men’s basketball team beat Elmira College, 90-65, Tuesday evening for the Saxons’ first Empire 8 Conference win of the season.

Alfred (5-6, 1-2 Empire 8) shot 56 percent from the field (40 percent on three pointers), made 83 percent of its foul shots, and forced 17 Elmira turnovers as the Saxons coasted. AU shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half and held a 47-38 lead at intermission.

Elmira shot 41 percent in the first 20 minutes and stayed close by making all 10 of its free throws. The Soaring Eagles tailed off after intermission, making only 32 percent of their field goal tries and finishing at 37 percent for the game. For the contest, Elmira made 20 of 24 foul shots.

Embury had the best game of his AU career, opening the game by making his first two shots, both three-pointers. He finished nine of 16 from the floor (five of nine from behind the arc) and added a team-high eight rebounds to go with two assists and a pair of steals.

Junior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) scored 23 points for Alfred, canning four three-pointers and shooting eight-of-13 from the floor while grabbing six boards and dishing out five assists. Sophomore guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 17 points on seven-of-10 shooting, and sophomore point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) made seven of 11 shots while scoring 16. Kwiecien also pulled down six rebounds and handed out five assists.

Jon Adamson scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead Elmira. Bobby DiPiazza and Noah Zazulia added 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. at Hartwick.
