Lady Saxons top Hartwick for first Empire 8 win

ONEONTA, NY -- The Alfred University women's basketball team edged host Hartwick College, 53-49, Friday evening, giving coach Jay Murphy his first career Empire 8 win as AU women's coach.

Murphy is in his first year at the helm of the women's team after serving 13 years as AU men's coach. With the win, the Lady Saxons improve to 6-4 in the year (1-2 Empire 8).

The teams were tied, 25-25, at halftime as AU made 46 percent of its shots to only 25 percent for Hartwick. For the game, Alfred shot only 39 percent from the floor, but held the host team to 30 percent shooting. AU made 21 field goals to 17 for Hartwick and won in part due to 46 percent shooting (six of 13) from three-point range.

Sophomore guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell), the coach's daughter, netted 18 points on seven-of-13 shooting (three-of-five from behind the arc), and added four boards and four assists to pace AU. Senior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover, NY/Wellsville) scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds, while junior forward Alysha Dias (Greece, HY/Greece Olympia) chipped in with six points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Freshman guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) scored nine.

Lauren Ploof scored a game-high 21 points for Hartwick and Cassie Dresser had 11. Danee Harrison and Fritzi Flores had 13 and 11 rebounds, respectively.

AU is in action next at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Utica.
