AU’s Murphy, Jordan earn Empire 8 women’s basketball honors

ALFRED, NY — Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) and Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall), guards on the Alfred University women’s basketball team, have earned weekly honors from the Empire 8 Conference.

Murphy, a sophomore point guard, was named Co-Player of the Week, while Jordan, a freshman shooting guard, was named Rookie of the Week. The Empire 8 honored the pair for their play in two home conference victories for the Lady Saxons, against RIT and St. John Fisher.

Murphy averaged 22 points, 5.5 rebounds, six assists and two steals in the two games. She shot a combined 16 of 26 from the field, including five of 11 on three pointers, and was seven of nine from the line. In the win over Fisher, Alfred’s first in 24 games all-time, she netted 26 points on nine-of-13 shooting, with two rebounds, six assists and four steals. She shares this week’s Player of the Week honors with Katherine Bixby of Ithaca.

Jordan averaged 14 points and 3.5 rebounds for the week. She netted a career-high 22 points on eight-of-12 shooting (six of 10 on three pointers) in the Lady Saxons' win over RIT. She had six points and a pair of rebounds in the win against Fisher.

AU is now 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8, tied for fourth place with Nazareth in the conference standings. The Lady Saxons are in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 6 p.m. at Nazareth.
